Im sure everyone in the PC world is really pooping themselves when Apple owns like a 2% share of the computer universe.

iPods are a fad... people will buy the cheaper mp3 players soon eough, since there are a bunch of them compatible with windows now
Not saying one is better than the other, since an mp3 player is worthless to me I won't buy one

I've been using PowerBook G4's at work for over a month now, and they're starting to grow on me. Biggest problem has always been advertised Mhz, but there's really no way to compare Macs to PCs so its pretty much in my head. Once they switch to Intel chips I will definetly try OS X, or whatever they have then, on one of my PCs.

Yeah... that's what everyone keeps thinking.. funny how it has not changed and we've see 2 hardware company's drop out of even trying because they could not hold water to the iPod.

Fad is something that comes and goes very quickly... bell bottoms, tie die, stuff like that.... this... this is going to be here for a while. I know people still using first gen ipods and loving it.

Stop being a hater and just live with the fact that Apple is going to start taking Intel chips and the other PC vendor will now have to deal with Apple in the same sandbox

</font>
Hey I'm not hating, I even said that I didn't think one was better than the other. Just think about it this way, if Infernal is right, then I am right
iPod was the first, had 100% control of the market, or close to it... they now have 75% share of the market, which means other companies are starting to make some sucess with mp3 players. Also, yes, bell bottoms and whatnot were a fad... a fad that lasted 10 years ;)

I am not against anything that Apple has done, I agree with everyone else on the benefit of the competition Apple has created.

The only thing I disagree on is the stability of the Apple OS and Microsoft OS They're both now very stable, but windows' bad reputation stayed with them.

I agree with that 100%. Windows XP is an amazing improvement over the previous win32 operating systems, and Microsoft is now addressing their huge Achilles heel, which is their past performance when it came to handling security in their code and products. Huge improvements across the board.

And when you consider that Microsoft has a much, much more daunting task keeping Windows stable than Apple does with Mac OS, it's even more impressive -- simply because Windows has to run on thousands and thousands of different hardware configurations, where as Apple has traditionally been in complete control of the hardware that their operating system runs on.

Hell, to be honest that was half of the problem with the pre-HAL Windows operating systems like Windows 95 and Windows 98. Other faults aside, they were fairly stable operating systems if you ran them on good hardware with Microsoft's own drivers -- problem was that Microsoft's drivers sucked, or didn't exist for half the hardware out there.

That's why they implemented the WHQL driver signing system in Windows XP.

One thing I will never understand tho is why people use Windows as a server operating system. I've worked many years in the software industry, with heavy emphesis on application services, and I've worked heavily with both Unix-based and Microsoft-based architectures. There is no contest. It's a nightmare to develop distributd applications for Windows. Also, the GUI in general is a totally inappropriate environment for server management, IMHO.

Which brings me to my next point -- will Macs find a new appeal with developers, if running on Intel hardware?

Here is my logic... Programmers love / appreciate the command line and having control over their operating system. This is why Linux is such a popular OS with developers. Unfortunately, it's nice to have a GUI for normal every day stuff like surfing the web or reading email or writing documents or spreadsheets, etc -- you know, all the every day business stuff that comes with the territory. Up until now many have been beating themselves over the head with Linux and XFree86 and some even convincing themselves that X is worth something. In truth, it's a useless POS, and this is coming from a life long Linux user and developer.

Now enter stage right, a new Mac built on an x86 architecture that runs OS X. Kick *** GUI / Window manager on top of a BSD-based nix implementation. It's almost a dream come true if you think about it.

I was reading that article, and there are a few things in it that make no sense. Like where they say "Desktops Macs still don't have RAID on the motherboard". My six year old powermac g3 that I'm using (that replaced my 2ghz wintel box), has two ide drives set up in a raid 0 array.

The new news about Apple switching in an Intel chip really makes my stomach churn. True, IBM has been slow at increasing the chip speed- but they've consistantly been proven faster than comparable intel chips. To me, and I'm sure a lot of Apple loyal people, it's comparable to Coke changing their recipe to Pepsi's

I sure hope we don't start seeing any of those stupid "Intel inside" stickers going onto Apple computers

It will do Software RAID, but hardware RAID is not supported on the MOBO from Apple. Also, see the post by our resident postmaster (dan) about his experience with RAID 0....

True... but RAID 0 is not meant for redundency, it's for speed. It's just me pointing out the obvious....
