/.
Steve Jobs announced at the WWDC keynote today that Apple is switching to Intel processors. MacNN has live coverage. The bottom line is that Mac OS X for the last five years has been running on Intel, the switch is expected to be complete in two years, and Rosetta will allow PPC apps to run on Intel-based Macs, transparently. If you're using Xcode, it is small changes and a recompile; otherwise, you might be seeing a lot of work ahead of you. You will be able to order the 10.4.1 preview for Intel today.
Well.. I remember the Beta of X having both on it... so I knew it was coming.... I was just in denial.

Welcome to the future.... let's see what Dell does next :D

Well since its been like 6 years, refresh my memory..

Does this mean that apple will no longer be using the SISC code? or RISC? One of those.. I remember they had to better of the two which allowed them to be just as fast with less..

I guess this also means the end of completely silent, convection cooled apples..

Oh well, probably best for apple in the long run. It migth cheapen them a little bit and broaded their usage ability.

Yes, they had RISC (reduced instruction set computer) over CISC. And yes, this gets them more power from a smaller Mhz chip.
Now.. with Apple getting into bed with Intel.... Dell will have to worry about the "new" Mac Mini coming...

putz.... XP is still behind Tiger... and Leopard (10.5) will still launch before Longhorn! and be on Intel at that point.

Steve Jobs is a business genius. The only difference between Jobs and Bill Gates is that Gates sold his soul to the devil. Back in 1995 when Jobs became CEO (again) Apple was a piece of crap company. Now its a force to be reckoned with. This will just provide another example.

I get offended when when Apple is not taken seriously.

As Camarorulz pointed out... Apple really is a force to be reconned with. The iPod... No one thought that would work.... I iMac... everyone thought that was a gimick. OS X... everyone seems to think XP is still better and Longhorn will beat it... I'm still waiting for Longhorn.. how about you guys?

Sun wants Apple... Microsoft wants Apple to go away... anyone wonder why? Maybe because Apple has something to offer or be scared of?

Those of you Mac haters.... let me know what you think about Apple and OS X when you can have your precious Intel chip set and have a box cheap (read: cheaper than the Mac Mini is now).

This "marrage" will open the door to Apple getting in the livingroom for a Media Center of there own. This will get faster  laptops. This will get machine prices down and force real competition with the PC vendors, in there OWN backyard.

As long as my OS X does not crash with a "blue screen" like Widoze does... I'll take the Intel chip. If I can get a Media Center running OS X... I'll take the Intel chip!

</font>
I agree all about the competition.

Just to inform you - I have not had the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) since I upgraded from windows 98 many years ago. During that time I was also using like OS8 or something, which crashed WAY more than win98 did.
I do not understand this blue screen phenomenon that is virtually nonexistant with XP

I think Microsoft is a good company, as well as Apple. They would have been better off going with AMD, but thats all opinion I think it will be interesting to see apple prices lower into the competitive field where PC enthusiasts can "build" an apple so to speak.

I will still be skeptical about compatibility until I see it working with my own eyes :D

My opinions:

1. RISC vs. CISC is debatable. Advances in branch logic prediction, on-chip cache speeds, and compilers that finally optimize code correctly, there isn't a whole lot of difference.

2. Windows XP is an incredibly stable operating system. I have been using it on multiple machines since day one, and I have seen one blue screen, and it was due to a fried sound card. One.

3. Mac OS X is an incredibly stable operating system. I have been a fan of it since day one. It has a powerful GUI, but the thing that impresses me most is that I can drop down to a command shell and I'm back in an environment that I'm used to -- total control.

4. Microsoft needs some competition. It's healthy for business and will drive down prices for all of us in the end.

5. Microsoft gets a really bad rap because it has become "cool" to bash them. It has almost become an obsession. The truth is, Microsoft has some really incredible products. They also have some really embarrassing products. Just like Apple.

6. Apple is never taken as seriously as they should be. Steve is right, they have become almost spookily proficient at developing niche products that sell like hot cakes.

7. They should have been working with AMD rather than Intel. I don't want to turn this into an AMD vs. Intel debate, because that is off topic. Let's assume for the scope of this topic that Intel and AMD have equivalent processors in every way. AMD would still win out IMHO in this situation, because generally AMD fans are the same type of people who love Apple products. Hard core, devoted consumers who have discovered that the underdog really can outshine the perceived winner.

8. I've been doing technical writing at work all day, which is why I'm numbering everything. Yes, I've lost my mind.

Tell that to our PC users here at work that see if more often than the techs would like. It still happens, trust me.

And AMD would have been fine, IF they could keep up with production. That is one of the reasons they did drop Moto and are dropping IBM. They are more interested in feeding the game console world than Apple with processors.

If Intel can keep up with Apples needs... so be it.

competition breeds a better product, unless your a car maker, then it just breeds bankruptcy.
