I just think naming these cars SS makes the name SS a joke. When you get a type R honda you know exactly what you are going to get...a car that has little to no sound detting(spelling LOL?) matterial, crazy break, great track poise, great balance, a motor is balanced and blue printed to the max, and the list goes on...when the brought out the Civic SI did they name it the TypeR to sell more cars? No! They didn't betray the name, they just came up with a stupid new name!
They could just call these cars something else...there are lots of other letters out there...SS no longer stands for anything, but a sales tool, that is what Chevrolet has reduced it to.2002 M5 camaro- VTR CAI, custom cat-back exhaust, battery compacitor, pullie, lowering springs, 32mm sway bar, cross-drilled slotted rotars. 1-10\" L7 in cubby.

I wanted to start a disgussion on this. I don't know if it is just me or not...but i am disgusted with Chevrolet putting the SS name on all these cars.2004 CE Corvette 10.86@132mph

I dont think SS ever meant that much. Many of the earlier SS cars came with 283s and 305s. I dont recall either of those engines being fast from the factory. I think MOST of the new ones do deserve the SS name and would blow the doors off most of the olds ones. Just because its fwd and a 4 or 6 cylinder does not mean its not fast or sporty.
I think the new monte carlo ss is now superchanged, which the old l36 def did not deserve to be an ss. Cobolt yes, Silverado maybe, I think it needs some more power.92 S10 3800 A4(96)<br />1/4: 14.374 @ 92.25 w/ 1.976 60\'<br />Turbo and 12\'s Coming Soon!

It isn't the speed man...most older cars are slow regardless of engine size. For instance the 1969 z28. That car was rated at like 290 hp but really had 390hp only ran a 15.1 1/4th when car and driver tested it...it isn't always the speed, it is the technology and the apeal of the day. And the new SS cars are a joke.
If you ask anyone what comes to mind when they heard SS 5 years ago you would hear things like big block, and muscle car and what not, cause that is what the SS name earned...but these new cars like i said have reduced it to a simple marketing tool.2002 M5 camaro- VTR CAI, custom cat-back exhaust, battery compacitor, pullie, lowering springs, 32mm sway bar, cross-drilled slotted rotars. 1-10\" L7 in cubby.

396 + RWD + crappy tires = Up in Smoke Sporty. Give the '69 Z28 some tires from today and watch it go low 13s....Black \'94 Trans Am A4- SLP CAI & Loudmouth<br />Red \'93 Firebird A4- Ram Air under the WS6 hood, !cat, exhaust.

I am not saying it was a bad car...i am on your team here man...i wish i had a 69 Z28. But i am just trying to say, if you were to say i have a 69 SS people don't wasy what size motor, or what does it run a quarter mile in...they simply say sick, what kind of SS. But now you are going to say i have a 06 SS and someone is going be like wow i hope it isn't one of those stupid max cars.2002 M5 camaro- VTR CAI, custom cat-back exhaust, battery compacitor, pullie, lowering springs, 32mm sway bar, cross-drilled slotted rotars. 1-10\" L7 in cubby.

So your saying 80s monte carlo ss's didnt ruin the ss name, when their brother the grand national humiliated them. Yes, ss seems like it is a model for each car now. MOST of them seem worthy of it to me though. There is a reason Chevy doesnt have any rwd v8 cars now, nobody was buying them. Like you said, its about the technology, we dont need big engines to make power anymore. It is also a plus that they can drive in every weather conditions, saftly. So you created this thread just to have people agree with you, that defeats the purpose of a message board. At least im friendly
If "ruining" the SS name is what it takes for GM to make a more performance version of each vehicle, ill take it.92 S10 3800 A4(96)<br />1/4: 14.374 @ 92.25 w/ 1.976 60\'<br />Turbo and 12\'s Coming Soon!
