i fixed my ps2 tonight! it wouldnt read purple discs, so i took it apart and fiddled with the laser voltage screws, and now it will read the purple ones, but only in the vertical position. i think the reason for this is it takes 4-6 volts less to run a disc in the vertical position.

vert is supposed to be bad for the ps2. when mine broke I just repositioned the laser. There's web sites all over the net, because its a pretty common problem. -

It wasn't necessary to open it up, I had the same problem and called Sony. They had a class action lawsuit against them so they're required to fix the problem for free. When I called them for that not long ago, the douchebag's told me it would cost 119 bucks and would take over 6 months.
