  • Attn: 95fbirdkid...........question about you being an officer.

Hey 95fbirdkid, I noticed you want to enter the field of "officering" or whatever you call it. (Being a policeman). Me, myself, am going into the field of Criminalistics. I've already completed the Advance Certificate for Applied Forensic Science, and can now get an internship at a Crime Lab (most likely LASO/LAPD). My question is this....

Here's some recent posts by yourself regarding a certain topic.

show me a study to prove it.

as far as i'm concerned pot is a plant, like tobacco, not a drug. drugs are man made or atleast processed (such as coca plant into cocain)

nope, never happend to me or any one i've ever smoked with
I didnt say it was "good for you" but its no more "bad for you" thank tobacco or alchohol (and I know people are gonna argue this, but do some research, theres plenty of studys out there proving this to be true). If you classify tobacco and alcohol as drugs than go ahead and put weed in there too, but if you dont think tobacco and alch are drugs, than leave out pot as well.
How do you plan to pass the background check given by the panel that reviews your application, as well as the lie-detector test they sometimes administer? A few of my teachers in the classes that I took got on the topic of applying for the job at a Crime Lab. And I'm sure it's the same for an officer, since they are both Federal positions encompassed by the State you work for. I've heard stories from the people who work the panel that have dismissed a person's application (That they really wanted in to work for them, met all the criteria, etc) because they had a history of past drug use. Even went so far as a few people who had too many traffic violations.

All I'm saying is, if I were you, I would watch what I say and what I do. Just looking out ;)

A couple of years ago, my buddy applied for a job as a firefighter for the city of Columubus. He got a letter stating he had been denied because of past drug use they got from the lie detector. The letter went further to state he should'nt bother applying to several neighboring communities because the city of Columbus had put him on a blacklist.

    That's kinda messed up.

Do they only dismiss you if you lie?

Whats if you are honest and say yes?

I've talked to several policemen who work for the city of columbus about this (one who has actually been on the board that interviews you). The actual rules state that:

        1) you must have not used or purchased marijuana w/in 1 year of taking the test.

        2) you must have not used or purchased any drugs other than marijuana w/in 7 years of taking the test.

I will be able to pass both of those criteria. These officers have also informed me that the dept knows that people arent perfect but they expect you to be honest about it. If you lie about past use its an automatic dismissle, but if you're honest and meet the criteria, its usually not a problem.

I know i've made some bad choices in the past. I dont smoke weed anymore and dont plan on doing it. even though i'm not a user, no, i dont think weed should be illegal. No matter how i feel about the subject personally, being a police officer, i will uphold the law. Simple as that.

I don't know what my department looks at as far as seeing if drug use passes or fails you. I took my drug test the same day I took my polygraph test, so I'd imagine if I had lied my way through the polygraph, then failed the drug test, I probably wouldn't have been hired (for the record, I've never done drugs). I know recently we've had some deputies fail drug tests, but they've also not sought help for their problem, and as a result they no longer work for the department. I'd hope that if one were applying for such a position, they'd try to resolve their drug problem & at least be honest about it when the time comes.

Ok people lets lighten up. If he wants to be a police officer then he may do so. His job is to uphold the law whether he believes it is right or not. If he doesn't uphold the law then he will be delt with buy his commanding officers. Taking what someone says on a car fourm about drug use is hardly credible when it comes to a person's actual history. We are all entitled to our opinions and that is one duty of law enforcement to protect and uphold our rights.
