• Wheres the bikers at?

Check this out. Saw an article on the front page of MSN stating 7 ways to avoid the Grim Reaper. Had a nice pic of a guy on a bike for the opening picture, lol.

Anyway, it states:

"If Death went retail, he'd open a motorcycle dealership. With sales figures doubling since 1998, bikes are booming—as are visits to the E.R., where staff call the brain-dead Easy Riders "donorcyclists." Fatalities among motorcycle riders and passengers spiked 12 percent in 2003, continuing an upward trend that began eight years ago. In fact, based on miles ridden, a motorcyclist is 21 times more likely to die in a crash than a guy driving a ho-hum Elantra." (Our lives are probably 21 more times as exciting too...)

An article like this doesn't phase me as im sure it doesn't phase the rest of you but stay safe guys. These cars don't give 2 craps about us. As for me, I'll be avoiding the reaper a bit longer while my bike hibernates 'till Spring. :D

Most of the "Easy Rider" donorcyclists wear only half-shells or no helmet at all (now that they repealed the helmet law here in PA).

Having gotten off a bike at speed before, I can't understand why anyone would wear anything less than a full-face helmet.

That and a little common sense riding go a long way towards staying alive. As a 15-year rider, I don't think I could ever give it up.

It's all about common sense. The kids that go out and buy the biggest bike they can afford (or not afford, depending on the situation) because it's "cool" are the ones eating pavement and screwing up the fatality statistics.

Still planning on getting a bike and riding, just have to wait and find out where I'm going to be stationed. I won't buy a bike if I gotta go to Hawaii or Germany.

I did have a bike, but I sold it for my Maro. I miss it very much and I keep meaning to save up for another one but I never do. Was I ever scared to ride? No. Have I been scared to drive? Yes. See, i'm 16. I've ridden dirtbikes since I was 5 years old. Here in TN, you can get you motorcycle license when you're 16, and I did. I rode my street bike for a little over a year. Put a little over 6k on the odo and never put a scratch on it. I had more close calls driving in 2 weeks than I did riding my bike for a year. Call me strange, but i'm more comfortable on a bike than in a car. What causes all these accidents are "cagers" who have it out for bikers and dont care if they live or die, and people who get on 750cc super bikes not having any experience at all on a bike. Even the manufacturerers tell new riders to stay off those bikes but people dont listen and they go out and one little slip-up is all it takes to kill yourself or others.

I need to learn to ride a bike soon cause everyone seems to be getting one.
I rode a moped once in myrtle beach, they go up to 55 mph and i was all over the road, I was really confortable with it, I think more confortable changing lanes and turning than with a car.
It's all about not driving too fast and too crazy and staying away from big cars.

Haha, I'ts all about staying away from big cars eh? Even a Ford Festiva can do you in buddy.

Its all about common sense and respect for the power. Same thing as a car, with just a little better hand eye foot coordination.

I understand the reason they donors where "skull caps" and usually nothing more than a t-shirt, but does not mean I would do that.

I still ride full gear. The worst I am is in jeans. Everything else is covered in leather. Gloves, boots, Alpinestars jacket w/back protector. It really is about the gear when it comes to 2 wheels.

Even on dirt you can get hurt without gear (been there done that). Being on the street just increases the threat of harm/death. Moving vehicles, concrete, pedestrians.

With that said... enjoy the riding as much as possible. I'm waiting ... patiently... for spring here! :D

Great article. My mom is a nurse and she tells me every day that if I die on my bike she will kill me. But, I guess she is supossed to hate my bike being a mom and all. After riding every day every where in all weather for just over a year I have really come to notice that you as a biker can avoid accidents at least 95% of the time. Its the freak ones that get you like the guy running into the back of you at a light or the guy who jumps the center divider. I know I have had many VERY close calls but I was easily able to avoid them all. Now road rage is a different story on a bike. I highly recomend the gloves with carbon or titanium knuckels not for crashes but for taking off peoples side view mirrors when they get too close. That to me is one of the most pricessless moments as a biker.
There is fast, too fast, and way too fast. Way too fast is almost fast enough.
