  • securing a wireless router?

    I just bought this router
    best buy
    (I had a 30 dollar gift card)
but idk how to secure it
everytime I try to tell it a network password or w/e it disconnects me
I cant use the windows wireless connections cuz the linksys software overrides it
    help!
I'm out of my league here lol
ive never really messed with wireless connections other than to mooch off someone else (which I dont want done to me, how ironic)

I never use any network software besides what's built into Windows.

You'll want to use WPA PSK mode for the wireless, then enter the code in your computer to be able to connect (XP will need at least SP1).

Probably a pretty good place to start for more info: user guide.

WPA is Wi-fi Protected Access. It's the standard security mode used today. More secure than those used in the past (such as WEP).

PSK means Pre-Shared Key. IE, a password.

Setting it to that mode means in your computer you just have to enter the correct password to connect. There were other ways to secure it, but this is the easiest.

All of this is in the user guide for that router under the section "Wireless Security". ;)
