nah, the '02 mustang has 193hp and 225lb-ft torque. so they're down 7hp, but they also weigh a couple hundred pounds less then the f-body. and yes, their auto tranny sucks balls.
thanks for all comments so far! ya i was kinda goin for the firebird! i found i really good deal on one, and im getting $6500 for my trade, so ill only owe $3000. only has 34k mil.
heres a link to my present car!
everyone has their own opinions on which car
so u cant just ask that
but the way I see it
everyone and their mothers have a mustang.
well, atleast where i live.
camaro's are cheaper and simpler.
firebirds are more curvey or something... i cant explain it but its like a dolled up camaro - i personally think the firebird with the w68 package looks better than the same on the camaro..
i'd go with firebird... but im biased cuz i already have one
atleast try and get bird/maro with the w68/y87 performance/appearance package you'll really enjoy it if you do.
Ok, being a teenager, I was dealt the same issue you have, only minus the fact that my parents wouldn't buy me a 2002 car for their life (I'm working on them for my winter car at the moment, however!).
Anyways, when I bought my black '99 Firebird, I was debating between that one (which I got a decent deal on) and a red 01 Mustang. It was a v6 automatic with the expensive sound system in it.
I liked the Mustang decently, and the interior was a little more "clean", but the buttons were a bit small for my liking, and I hate green back-lighting on the speedometer clusters.
It's not that it wasn't fast, or anything, I just didn't like the fact that there didn't seem to be a hell of a lot to do with it. It needed new rims (the stock ones are nasty), a raised hood like the GT's had, and a sunroof. That was about all that I could visibly see doing it it, next to a leather swap.
With the Firebird, the options were so much bigger.
It has dark gray cloth interior which can quite easily be upgraded to leather (working on that), it had a five speed manual, T-Tops, which NO new Mustang has, chrome rims that looks decent, and a lot that can be done to mod it.
If you don't like the low spoiler that is stock on Firebirds, spend a little bit on upgrading to a Trans Am hatch so its raised. I bought one off eBay and had it shipped for about 320 bucks, which is a steal considering it was off a 2001 black Trans Am. It got a little damaged on the way over, but very minor.
There's a **** load of decals (non-ricey ones) that can be put on the body, there's tinting, there's Ram Air hoods (which are amazing lokoing on the 1998+ models, engine mods, exhaust mods, you name it.
I think the Camaro looks very sophisticated, and I like that it doesn't have pop up headlights, but so far, I've had no problesm with mine.
However, I do think the Firebird is a little bit more of a "younger" looking car. It seems to me that Firebirds shout Jazz and Spiciness whereas the Camaros are more about Style and Sophisticatedness (I dun't think thats a word lol).
Firebird:
-Pros:
*RED backlighting!
*many mods to do to a stock V6.
*lots of power for a teenager (trust me)
*looks a lot more expensive than Mustangs
*generally (GENERALLY) are rarer than Mustangs
*turn a lot of heads and get compliments
*people think you have a V8 (don't fake badge!)
-Cons:
*Pop up headlights
*Front license plate cover looks tacky if you have to have a front license plate
*"Cheaper" looking interior (grey plastic-look)
Camaro:
-Pros
*lots of mods
*head turner
*good performance (same as F-Bird)
*interior isn't as "cheap" looking
*non-pop up headlights that look cool
*front license plate bracket
-Cons
*Ugly seats (looks like one big suppository I think)
*Green backlighting (I think)
*Not as "sporty" as a Firebird
*Interior isn't as "cool" looking.
Mustang:
-Pros
*Um....oh YEAH! Uh, they are smaller cars?
-Cons
*Less horsepower
*Much more common
*Less mods
*VERY tiny interior buttons
*Green backlighting
And as you can see, my final consensus was my Firebird. At times I've regretted it, but I love my Firebird with a passion. It looks a lot more expensive and overall, just looks like a better car than a Mustang does, especially in black.
Let us know what you go with!!!
Summer:
1999 Black Pontiac Firebird Coupe
5-speed, T-Tops, Chrome Rims, TA Hatch, Reflective Decals.

Winter:
2000 Silver Grand Am GT
Reflective Black Badge Overlays, chrome
I personally would get a firebird. They look HOT too. I am not just saying that cause I own a 98, but I just love how they look. I like all of your choices though...
1998 Silver Firebird
Basic mods... nothing real special but it sure looks good!
maleetpobanz.com
This is NO contest .... go Camaro or Firebird. Just depeneds which looks better to you. Personally I like pre-98 Camaros with their older style open headlights better, but post-98 I prefer Birds. You can't go wrong either way :D
