• Move up or Move on? (V6 or V8 thread)

I rode in a Mustang with a 342 CI dropped in and I nearly forgot the power of a V8 sucking you into your seat... Well deal is this... The guy with the Mustang is experienced with engine swaps and can help me find cheaper places to get it done... At the same time though I was just going to mod and do the internals of my V6 to get roughly 275 HP... Question is this...

Should I mod my V6 to get 275 - 300 HP

or

Should I buy a LT1 and bore / stroke it to a 383 with a mild cam, heads, and bolt ons and drop it in?

Basicly I don't know if I want a V6 or a V8 after riding that stang. My guess would be to start saving up for the V8 because there's always room for more power and I'm at a better stand off but I would still like to see how fast I can get the six...

Relatively speaking, theres only so much you can do with a 6. I would go with the 8.

i think go V8, sounds better , gas miledge wont to much worse than a highly modifdyed v6. and like Question said, theres only so many things you can do.in the long run i think u'd be better off with a 8

i almost did an LT1 swap instead of the blower..honestly..if my car was stock except for the performance mods..i probably woulda stripped them off and sold it for a V8 by now..i keep it for 3 reasons:
1) sentimental value
2) love the feeling of kicking the crap out of even slightly modded V8s
3) too much custom/show work into it other than performance mods..id never make CLOSE to my money back
..my plan is pay it off..then get a V8..swap as much crap over to the V8 as i can..the nitrous, wheels, hood, hatch, exhaust, gauges, etc..then sell the V6 basically stock..the difference is you're talking about just doing a motor swap (too involved for me so i dont feel like it)..you keep the whole rest of the car..personally if i had the money/time to do that now..i would..just make sure you get a good LT1 without TOO many miles on it..i say..go with a bad @ss V8!

BTW..theres a guy selling an LT1 with 56K miles/tranny/rear on fbody.com ..i thought someone was selling one here too

v8 > v6

you can do the same amt of mods to a v8 and get much more horses than with a v6

You're looking at some serious money to get 300HP out of a 3800 II V6's. Whether you go FI, N20 or NA.

A small list of things that need to be replaced whith that much power.

Tq Converter
1pc DS
Rear disc conversion (more power means you need better brakes)
LSD
Fuel pump
tuning

You're gonna need a cam, so new springs, retains, pushrods.

Might as well do internals, because HP is addicting. So add pistons, connecting rods, bearings ect.

When you're all said and done, it's gonna cost you probably close to 10k or more. Then you have to think about driveability.

I had plans drawn out for a 300HP NA beast for my old camaro, but I gave up on it, simply because I couldn't justify spending $10k+ on my car.

Or you can spend 1/4 as much, and drop a mildly cammed LT1 in, or go out and buy an entire LT1 car for about 5-6k.

I've never heard of any LT1 383 stroker's running 7 second 1/4 miles or better.

I would. But that is because I go for originality, and challenge. If I wanted to own a v8, sure as hell wouldn't be a GM. Why would you want to be like everyone else; you are just another person with an LT1 or LS1, sounds boring to me.

honestly.. i love the power and feeling from a v8.. but i love my gas mileage..

instead just get yourself a banged up camaro or something u like.. pick it up for 500 - 1000 bucks.. and do all the work yourself..

my friend just picked up a 96 lt1 formula with a cracked head for 700 bucks.. he replaced the heads with pnp heads, cam swawp, and other drive train parts.. thing is a monster now. only had 60k miles on that motor. Just get rid of optispark as your first mod.

thats what i plan on doing.. gett'n a worn down camaro, and doing the body work and whatnot myself. as a project car. but im years away from doing that..
