  • I don't get it, what's the attraction

Why are so many out of state people moving to California?

(I heard this on the news radio today) I mean, my wife and I are trying to get out. We're looking into Arizona for jobs.

So what is the attraction? The beach? The people, what celebreties? Disneyland? The governor?

I mean Calif. has insane traffic jams, overcrowding, highly competitive jobs that's hard to get, long commutes and the toughest emission laws there is. It can't be the housing. Average 3 bedroom, house is well over 600k. A house in a slum sells for over 400k.

So why would anyone wants to move to Calif. or in that case, even stay.

Ahem, speaking as the only one of the 3 above who has ACTUALLY moved to California within 2 years (and suspecting the only one to have visited CA).

          Only have 2 reasons.

1 - Job. If I wasn't offered this job, or it disappeared I'd be gone in 2 weeks.
2 - CALIFORNIA F'ING 10. None of you hosers in the middle of the US will ever see anything like them. See it works like this. Woman = 1-10. Seattle 10 = California 8.

Other than that. Well... Just the sheer knowledge that I pay more in taxes for everything (state, sales, gas, property) makes me feel less worried about my chances of being hit by an uninsured (probably unlicensed) driver who there's a 25% chance doesn't speak english. This in turn distracts me from the smog (WHICH IS ONLY REALLY BAD NEAR LA - as Thor can attest to that Norco gets smog, but it isn't as bad as 20 miles north of him at Ontario).

Oh, BTW Thor, quick tip. When you move, drive to Arizona and get the U-haul. I learned when I dropped mine off that it's 40% expensive to get a U-haul in California then it is most other states...

Only thing I don't like about it is smog laws... other than that, Cojones did make a good point. The women here are SO DAMNED HOT ITS REDICULOUS.

And yes, cost of living is higher, but minimum wage is $6.75. "minimum" wage in Southern CA is more around 9-12/hour.
I have heard of people making like $4/hour in texas.

I will eventually move to California once I graduate from college. I love the weather, I love the atmosphere, and I think there are a lot of opportunities to make it big.

only houses in southern cali and san fran cost 600k. my brand new house costed 250,000 in 1998. but then again i live in a rich community. it all depends on where you live. and for jobs, i dont know, but i assume you are right with competition becuase housing developments are growing like weeds out here. our population as ~70,000. 5 years ago was maybe 40,000.

California is not all that bad. It's about the best place to live if you are a minority. You don't have to worry about having crosses burned on your lawn, bricks thrown through your windows, or other people harassing you because of your race. You can walk into a restaurant without having everyone stop and stare. We've had some uncomfortable experience travelling to Wyoming. People ask us where we're from: China, Japan, Korea... You should see the looks on their faces when we tell them we're from California.

Also, the weather is best in California. You have 2 seasons: Spring and summer. Snow? What's that? The coldest "winter" I remember was when it turned 40 degrees and there was a light layer of frost on my windshield.

If you can live with the expensive rent/house prices, high taxes, and traffic jams, Cali isn't all that bad.
