• Some networking help

I've moved my computer desk out of my room into the family room on the other side of the house.

In doing this, I'm presented with a slight problem. My cable drop for the internet is in my room and I'm NOT rewiring it. So I still have the modem and my wifi router sitting on a shelf in my room.

Now, I'm setting up my multiple computers out in the living room where my desk is, and I don't want to buy wifi cards for each computer.

I have an old switch sitting around collecting dust and wanted to have a wifi box into the switch and have cables running from there to my computer.

My question is what would that 'Box' be called? Is it a bridge?

WiFi box? I believe you're thinking of an Access Point.

I don't understand what you're wanting to do. You want to run a cable from your wifi router to a switch out in the living room, then plug your computers and a "wifi box" into the switch?

its called a wireless ethernet bridge. the best thing you could do is just move the cable modem and router to your living room. you have to have a cable drop there.

Your cable drop for the internet should be the same as for the television, so just use that like the previous poster said.

Also, it would be more expensive to get a wireless to ethernet bridge than just buying another card.

If I do that, I'd have to split the cable, which I don't want to do. I'd also have to call the cable company to have them take the filter off that drop.

Dojo, I already have an AP. It's in my room. I want to hook a bridge into my switch. It would go, cable modem->AP>~wireless~>Bridge>switch

Bridges are freakin expensive. I might just get a wifi card for one of the desktops and bridge the connection in windows. Or buy another WRT54G and download the firmware hack to let me use it as a bridge. I think I can do that, I'd have to do some research first.

Just did some research and it looks like I can pick up another WRT54G and turn it into a bridge for half the price of linksys' "official" bridge.

Depends on your setup. If you have a Wifi card already in your computer, which it sounds like you do, then all you need is a 10/100 mbps ethernet card. Have your wifi card work normally, then share that connection. take your wired ethernet card and plug it into the switch. then it should all work. I have a couple computers here at work setup this way and it works good. Only problem is if your trying to play games or something it might be a little laggy. Or you can always go out and buy a bridge.

buying a cable splitter is alot cheaper, and would still make your process a million times easier. You wouldnt even need your switch since all the wires could come from the router. Which in theory would keep your internet access as fast as possible.

As far as I know, any filters implemented by your isp are programmed into the modem itself, not per drop. In fact, I dont see how they could do it per drop.

Anyway, its your setup, you have a better idea of what you want and can do. So I hope I was able to answer your question. At least point you in the right direction.

A splitter would be much cheaper, but like I said the cable company would have to come out and take the filter off the line. And they'd probably charge me an arm and leg for it.

The way they put in a filter on a per drop basis, is they have the master cable go into the box on the side of your house. From there it goes into a 5 or 6 way splitter. Then they would put the filter on the drops that it's needed on, and that drop goes into your house.

I know they no longer use filters in the newer setps, but trust me, this is how my house is setup, I watched him do it. And this was installed several years ago, I want to say its been 7 or 8 years. As soon as it was available, we had it installed.

On top of that, I already tried plugging the modem into the drop in the living room, it doesn't work.

Gergwheel, I don't have wifi card for my desktop yet. I was originally going to buy one and do it this way, but for $10 more I'd rather buy the second router and hack the firmware. Also doing it this way, from what I understand, it will also act as an extender. I don't need one, but I might as well go this route as I get more bang for my buck.
