• Move Out or Move Up

I have been considering this for awhile... This will be a long post, please bear with me

A little background info, I turned 18 this summer and got a new job offer as well. Few weeks ago was my 3-month review accompanied by a dollar raise. After turning 18 this summer I also went out and got my own checking, savings, and credit account so I am just starting to establish credit. Now that I have this raise, I've got some spare cash and moving out is a good possibility, but will leave me a little strapped. I have also wanted to upgrade to a V8 for the longest time. Now I know I can't do both, unless I get a really cheap apartment with a roomate.

Last week was real stressful at home, I went out that weekend apartment hunting and found a nice place at a decent price, much closer to my work than I am now though still a little far. I went back the next day and plopped down the $40 lock-in fee. The deal is they are doing a $40 special and taking $40 off monthly rent. Nice looking place and from what I hear from other people they're pretty decent.

I'm also starting to get more and more into the car scene, and I'm really hurting for a V8. I have dreamed about this upgrade over and over again and pondering what kind of setup I could run, turbo or N20 or NA, ya know that kind of stuff. Other than maintenance, I haven't spent a dollar on anything for the bird that I can't easily remove when I sell it, and this has been the main reason.

The reason for me wanting to move out is the normal obvious stuff like no restrictions from parents, and my annoying lil bro lol.

Anyways I'm starting to pay for my bigger expenses (the car battery a few weeks ago, gas fillups, etc) with the credit card and pay it off right away obviously. I did talk to a credit union a few weeks ago (no credit app, just talked to them) and they said I would probably need to wait a few months while making my payments ontime to build some more credit to get a loan.

For now my parents aren't too willing to budge on the main restriction that's bugging me (12:30 curfew), but I think I can work on them over time. My dad cruised with the other car guys once upon a time so I'm sure he understands :D

Chime in. Tell me what you think.

Edit: Gahh, meant to make this a poll. Whatever

hard to say, if I had to do it over again, and live at home and hace a v8...

I'd still move out, and keep my v6s.

all the parties, fun, drinking, girls and good times imo is way better then a car.

But I also went to the college scene where the party scene is around more.

I'll be honest when I say I enjoyed being at a party in my own place and hooking up with a girl, then most of the times I spent in a parking lot bsing about cars, and having a nice car. I have just as much fun bsing cars with my v6.

Oh and I might add after the first two replies, I have done my research on the costs involved, it's a fright but I can afford it.

I'm not much of a party guy now. I've been to a few but for now I'm working full time, might take a few classes at the community college next semester or something.

I definitely wouldn't have a party at my place, and it doesn't seem like that kind of an apt complex anyways. But it would be nice to be able to get out and go to one every once in awhile.

        Thanks guys :D

PS shenanigans, off the top of your head how much was your T-top conversion? I had to explain to a co-worker today what t-tops were and he had asked me why I hadn't "put them on my car".

One things clear though, next F-Body I get whether its in a few months or within a few raises after moving out, t-tops are a must lol. Don't care if I have to fix a few leaks

99.9999999998% of all t-top leaks can be fixed with a phillips head screw driver, $3 worth of stuff from autozone and 10 minutes time.

my conversion cost like $350ish all used parts. Had to buy a few tools for it but didn't include that in the price because well I needed a normal circular saw in general, not jsut fo a t-top conversion.

If you can afford it move out, but if it is tight stay at home and save or find a roommate. Playing with cars is fun, but it isn't worth wasting away all of your money. You need to be saving some on the side for a rainy day or that next big purchase like a house.

I moved out 3 days after I turned 18, I wouldn't go back unless something bad happened. I get along better with my parents now and LOVE my freedom. My buddies are over drinkin every weekend and we have tons of fun together. I am living with my fiancee and we do have a lot of bills but I love it.

He's got it right. F*ck your car. Go have fun. Make friends. MOVE OUT! You won't regret it. Most importantly (or second most importantly), get an education.

I know you really want the Trans Am, but I'd move out first - even if you're not the type to host parties on weekends or otherwise live it up outside of your current curfew, moving out and becoming independent is a huge step in your life.

Downside - once you're on your own, even living with roommates won't seem like a hot idea anymore

Move out, go to college, take out student loans if you have to (I did and don't regret it.

Live on campus and you will have a great time if you want to. I lived on campus for a year and had the best year of college.

and work part time while you're in school so you can still enjoy your car.
