• Sleepers... Tell me about it... (and a few random questions)

Teach the grasshoppa. A few questions... I know they're kind of random and somewhat non-related but well... my brain connects 'em lol.

1) Sleeper means it looks stock but it is much more powerful right? Or is it that it SOUNDS stock... or is it that it is a really quiet car (that's what sleeper sounds like to me anyway)... or is it some combination of those?

2) Even if it doesn't mean it's quiet.... Is exhaust pretty much the only thing you can control in regard to the noise output of a car? I'd love having a stealthy car that is pretty quiet.

3) Is it possible to make the exhaust really quiet without sacrificing performance?... seems like if you deaden the sound you have to cut some of the airflow too.

4) Headlight blackouts... is it kind of like tinting a car (see next question for what I'm thinking)? The headlights are still really bright right? Is it legal?

5) Strictly speaking.. it's illegal to get any kind of tint on your windsheild (other than stock) in every state right?

6) and the most random question... How have you lightened your car? I might like to do this... but I don't want to ghettofy my car (like no carpet) if possible. Is it still safe with however you lighetned it if you got in a wreck.

Thanks!

For all my haters out there, I think I did a pretty good job of keeping it to one topic so care to answer my questions instead of insulting me?

1) A sleeper is a car that is much faster than it appears or sounds.
2) Pretty much, that's right.
3) It is possibly, but only completely possible through an electric cut out that is controlled through a switch inside the car.
4)If you 'tint' headlights you are just making them dark and making it dangerous. It is much safer to tint your windows than to tint your lights.
5)It is illegal to tint your windshield in any state, even if you have a prescription that states your eyes are sensitive to light.

1) Yes, basically it doesn't look or isn't thought to be as fast as it really is. i.e. GTP

2) Yes, you can control the noise to a point.

3) The only way to not sacrifice hp with an exhaust is to just simply not run one. All exhausts are restricting, some just less than others.

4) Beats me? The only reason window tint is illegal is because police cannot see inside the car. You could be hiding an AK-47 and they won't have the slightest clue until you roll the window down.

5) Check your states laws. They all differ. *Edit Didn't see you said windshield. Why would you do that? I have 5% tint and I have a hard enough time driving at night with the other windows tinted. It would be pure hell with the windshield tinted.

6) Yeah it's safe. Just don't remove things that involve anything that deal with safety. ie seat belts, bumper supports, ect.

1 looks mainly, but sound intimidates more. so have it quite and look stock. Best way is to debadge and put on the stock camaro hubcaps...

2intake will also make ur exhaust sound different

3 not sure

4 they are illegal at night, but when ur headlights are on, when looking directly at the car you cant tell they are on there. And the lights ARE NOT just as bright, I had to keep my bright on with them on.

5 its illegal in all states except for the top I think 3 inches, may be 4

6 spare/jack , "racing seats" , take out the cushen sound deadner under the carpet, take out rear seats, no added stereo in the back of coarse, go on a diet , remove a/c components if u dont really need them where u live, lighter wheels, ask james aka 12secv6, he knows more about this than anyone...

While we are on the subject, has anyone gone through the trouble to weigh parts they take off?

(like stock carpet with padding and deadener, rear seats, rear seatbelts, spare, jack, etc.)

I think Magnus had a write up on his page about this. I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks, answered a few questions. I guess that means I dropped around 70bls last night(not counting my no insulation/deadening material).

there is a little line on one or both sides of the upper windshield that says AS-4 or something like that, its illegal to tint below that line.

Excellent answers! Thanks!

I was just thinking. If I upgrade to those ultra-bright slightly-blue looking lights I've read some people talking about... will that perhaps allow me to have blacked out headlights and not have to worry about them being too dim?

no, i have the hyper white bulbs with black outs, i didnt notice a difference in brightness with the stock and hyper white w/ my black-outs. the only way i can see is if my fog lights are on. but its not great. im going to install fog lights in the two holes in my grill and have them facing straight out. i hope it will help with seeing.

Wrong about one thing - if you have the same eye condition *I* have you CAN tint your windshield to a point ;)
