i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but i can't back you up at all. blackouts are illegal. most states adopt chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 571, Standard 108; also known as the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. CFR specifies the requirements for OEM equipment on new cars. manufacturers have to meet certain requirements before they can have a car approved for sale in the US.

adding blackouts, or any covering for that matter, lessens the amount of light intensity and the angles at which the light is visible. NHTSA also notes that adding any covering will allow for the collection of dirt and debris which will further reduce the light intensity.

if you want to get really technical, adding any sort of covering over a light at all, including those 4-wheel drive light guards, and even the flip out bed extenders, are all illegal. lights must be visible from 30 degrees inboard and the bed extenders and light guards prohibit this.

571.108 gets really specific. it's best to leave OEM equipment alone. in texas, this isn't drawn out in the transportation code, but it says that texas adopts the federal standard as it applies to OEM equipment.

this is why you also cannot have white park lamps, and white markers in the back. those are federal requirements.

        yes, monkey is the ****

and you don't see any headlight blackouts because it's a firebird . i have taillight blackouts, and the car is black so when the headlights are down, they're black anyway. it'd be kinda stupid to blackout headlights that you can't even see until you turn them on. once i get a job and some money, i wanna blackout the side markers and turn signals. then get black rims. and black tint. yes, this is one black car.

Oh duh, I saw the camaro down at the bottom and thought it was yours too, didn't read the comment n/m then.

Maybe if I wax mine up enough the "laser will get confused" like with the infamous IROC driver. Add my chain steering wheel and yosemite sam mud flaps and I'll be invisible.

O_o... I'm going to have to do some major thinking if I am going to do this then. rawr, I'll probably just call up the local PD and see what they think about the matter.

That would have been the logical first and only step instead of listening to a bunch of kids tell you what they think is true.

See what they think about the matter? Do you expect them to say, "Well, yea, you know, they are illegal, but, we don't really seem to care or pay much attention to it." No...

Just realize, that if you do put all this on, you are making yourself more noticeable. My buddy has all that crap (dark tint, blackouts, plate covers, cowl guards), and he is always picked out of a group of speeding cars, and gets the ticket. He was never pulled over just because of that particular stuff though.

Im willing to bet you'd be fine though if you didn't draw attention to yourself.

Just seeing if anyone knew for sure that they were legal and it would have saved me the trouble of calling. I might as well call. If the person on the line says they're not then I can just get their name and reference to them if I get pulled over for them.

light covers, shades of tint, exhaust, probably most of your mods, etc., are ALL illegal. sucks doesnt it? either way, if you get pulled over for it, be nice........attitude is key. but you should know that.

i have never had a problem with taillight covers, mainly cause our taillights are so damn bright. headlight covers are a PITA in the rain anyway, makes you see EVEN LESS than normal.

I'm glad to hear about those taillight covers... I was actually going to ask about that.

The one encounter I had was for a broken taillight... and I was freaking out because I thought that maybe he thought I launched too hard when the light turned green... or that I didnt' stop long enough turning right on the red or something...... or that he was going to stop me for speeding 1-2 mph over... and the last thing I needed was a ticket at my age... He was nice acuatlly.

I've heard otherwise though. Basically I live in suburbs near a lot of rich rich people... rich people are often picky and easily irritated... basically snobby and make big deals out of stupid things.

I've seen a judge in this area and he was a biased idiot... The prosecutor was decently attractive female, the defense was a fat totally unattractive male with thick glasses. The judge actually chuckled to himself at some of the things the man said, but obviously showed his support for the prosecutor and supported EVERY one of her objections... even one that didn't exhist (If I remember correctly... according to my father, a former lawyer) I talked to a lawyer and I forgot exactly what he said but he said the law system up here is known as "the kremlin" or "gestapo headquarters" or something along those lines

I heard stuff about the police from my peers at school. A lot of them are low-life drug junkies with no respect for anyone so it's quite possible they just have bad attitudes and get what they deserve from cops... I wouldn't be surprised if there is a kernel of truth in what they say though.

Even the city LIBRARY is stupid. I worked there for over a year, (just now quit... finally got an awesome job)... they have a bazillion policies... making new ones all the time. The library director is pretty stupid... basically he just does whatever the rich library board wants without considering the well-being of the employees. He makes rules that make is bend over backward hop on one leg and spin a plate with one arm without even knowing he's doing so. He's never worked in circulation and can't even check something out himself. I think if he doesn't know what we're doing, he shouldn't be in his position. Circulation has been up 9.5% (That's a lot when you have 1000's and 1000's of members) since this same time last year... the libary is loaded with money.. and do we have even one extra employee to help us out? NO... we just work tons harder and get paid the same.

I'm always respectful... fearful really. I don't want to tick off the guy that can let me off with a warning or completely screw me.... I just don't want to give them any extra excuses y'know? If I'm already pulled over and he's having a bad day how hard is it for him to be like "oh yeah... and as for your tint.. and those blackouts... heck.. even your exhaust looks modded... here's a fine for $$$" I just don't plan on being pulled over in the first place and hope that I don't become a target.
