  • Radar and Security questions

Okay here is my problem. for X-mas last year when I visited my parents they told me for a gift they would get me a security system/starter for my car. I still have not taken them up on it yet. Now my B-day has come and I still did not know what I wanted so I decided on a radar detector.

So a radar detector and security system

I don't know WHAT is good brand or what is a good deal. all I know is I don't want a low budge cheap Radar detector that is going to be a waste of money... at the same time I don't want over kill. Just somethign that works. Same goes for Security systems. With the security system though I would like something that has trunk release, door locks and hopefully a auto starter... but I think I might have to do the starter seperate???

Need some guidence and suggestions on brands ect.

Bell makes great radar detectors. That's what I use.

    Where in CT are you?

V1 or Passport are areguably the best. They also cost $400-500.

v1 is the ****... but not sure if it fits your budget or not...

My dad has one, and I wish I did too.

Passport is the stuff, but I wasn't willing to pay that much. Whistler is pretty low quality.

Beltronics is mid-grade. Mine is called Express 946 Cordless - link to it here Personally, I think it works very well. Rechargable batteries are a must though.

I would recommend that you don't speed. This would completly eliminate the need for a radar detector. This would also allow you to ask for other more useful items for your car. As far as radar detectors go most of the time when they go off it's already too late.. Trust me I know, I am the one that is holding the radar gun.

I on the other hand, recommend you speed as much as possible.... just kidding. If you are going to get one get a nice one or it's not worth bothering. The reasons people get caught are:
                1. they are using a cheap detector and it didn't warn them early enough
                2. they don't know how to drive and read the detector to tell when it is a speed trap
                3. they got hit by laser

Just because you have a radar detector doesn't mean you can go flying down an empty highway and not get busted. Also, I rock the V1.

i bought this top of the line cobra
                  http://cgi.ebay.com/Cobra-XRS-9600-R...QQcmdZViewItem
took it back after a week. Don't waste your money on those. I now don't see any use of them . After my two tickets i don't drive fast on highway anymore. Both of my tickets were "pace" that means police were behind me and whatever he had on his speedo that was my speeding. if speed limit is 65 just set your cruise to 75 and enjoy. Usually police never pulls over for 10 mile excess. Be safe and keep a safer road for someone else.If you really want one, get valentine 1 or Passport. btw one of my ticket i got 2 days after i got my camaro. I went to a Sunoco gas station and they didn't had anything other than ultra (94-95) i filled it up and wanted to see how fast my camaro will go. I went upto 107 but for some reason i decided to slow down istead of going up for 120. As i was slowing down (didn't pay attention to tiny conv. rear view)state trooper stoped me and game me a ticket for 90 in 65. He didn't use any radar at all. so, radar detector isn't always helpful..

Thanks guys. I did just want to clarify one thing. Just because I was looking into one does not mean I speed around like a crazy idiot all the time. Granted I speed once in awhile but its more like when the highway opens up and I have lead in front of me I tend to not realize how fast I'm going until its too late.

The prices for the best are way out of what I'm looking for and it seems not worth it to get a cheapo one. so I'm going to pass on that all together.

What about on a security system or car starter? Know of any?

Don't buy into "laser detector" b.s. because they don't work. For my speed enforcement class for law enforcement, my commander used a laser gun (not the correct term really) at about 100 feet and "fired" it within an inch to two inches off to the side and the radar/laser detector didn't go off. One of my buddies did the same test with a citizen in his district. He had the guy drive down the road and flash his lights if his detector worked. He never flashed his lights untill it was aimed directly at it; this was done with distances over an 1/8 mile. We usually target license plates anyways because they are the most reflective f.y.i. Radar is a different story. Also, officers at least in Ohio, are trained to estimate visual speed within 3mph consistantly for certification.

What a waste of citizen's tax money. Why not just tell the officers to take some time off for a nap. You can't tell what speed someone is going just by watching them drive by. Maybe if they count the lines on the road and recorded the time it took for them to pass a specific amount, but even with that its a waste because it would never hold up in court. If I got pulled for something like that and had to waste my time to go to court I would be furrious.

I went on a ride along with him, I held the radar gun while he would guess the speed. He was only off by 5 mph one time out of about 20 cars.
