You're probably also the kind of guy that charges $80 to change an air filter and will recommend to make repairs on minor things that don't need to be fixed, or blow them extremely out of proportion, making the problem seem much, much worse then it really is.

                </font>
I am paid for how many cars I work on. If I get that car pushed in and on my hoist I have time in it, taking away from what money I could be making on a car that actually has a problem. If I dont charge, I will have lost money.

                And no, I dont charge to change air filters And no we dont blow stuff out of proportion. Majority of what we do is maint. work -- engine, coolant, tranny flushes are big sellers. We always show the customer what "damage" or "wear" needs to be fixed, just to show we dont rip people off. People seem to think though, that when we tell someone their CV boots are torn and the grease is gone, their risk of the axle breaking is greatly increased, is total BS.. Though majority of them do fix it, you wouldn't believe how many ignorant people are out there. My favorite was the guy who had an Acura Legend that I sold $1200 worth of repairs too. 2 broken front springs, 2 torn axle boots, a leaking axle seal in to the tranny, and that was just what I found initially.

                Like I said, I'm paid to fix cars and paid by the car, I'll dig to find problems but I refuse to send people home with their *** sore because I ripped em off. But dont come to me with a no-start due to the fact that your gas gauge reads a big ol' "E" ... Now if the gas gauge is faulty, thats a different story... But if its plain as day on "E" and you dont know why it wont start, I will charge you 1 hour of diagnostic for it tying up my hoist and my time.

                Time is money baby.

                  yeah, if she was dumb enough to take it into the shop she deserved to be charged
                  some stuff is common sense
                  It isnt the mechanics fault that people are dumb sometimes, if he has a car up on his lift trying to find a problem that doesnt exist he could have had someone with a real problem up there. If he doesnt charge, he just lost money
                  I woulda charged too

                    Right, but you are still saying you would charge for the full hour when the car only took 25 minutes of your time. That garage wasn't being nice, they were just being fair. So in your case, you would screw the customer out of 40 bucks because they are "dumb and deserve it".

                      Nah, people know up front they pay for an hour of diagnostics. Thats bookrate. You pay what the book says. If I replace a timing belt in an hour (can be done) I'm not going to charge them an hour of labor, I'm going to charge them the full 4.5 hours of labor for that timing belt because you pay for what you get. If you want your car done by someone who knows wtf they are doing and want it done fast, they'll get it done, but you wont pay any less for it. Thats why flatrate technicians either make damn f'n good money, or no money at all. You have to be at or beat book-time Simple, as, that. .4 hours of diag, like I said, is being nice.
