Why do you choose to be in the military?

I really wanted to be a fighter pilot (F-16), but I just can't bring myself to being thrown around the world at "uncle sam's" wish and I don't feel like being "owned" by the governement. So, therefore, I descided that my free will is more important than flying F-16.

The only reason I will join the military is when we're actually being invaded or there's PROVEN threat that needs immideate attention (such as WW3). Just cuz bush blabbers something about iraq and it's blurry involvment into national security, this alone won't be enough to draw me to enlist. Why would I put my life on the line just because some retarded old man, that has difficulty speaking his own native language, wants to declare war?

I am currently in the Army, and have served since 1985. I realized that while we have all these freedoms, some people dont and have come to us and asked us for help. Now that I am a new Dad, I feel the need to make the world even safer...go to some far away land is just part of the job.
In my eyes, ridding the world of these people who have no respect for humanity is well worth the work.
Jan.5th I redeploy to the middle east for the 3rd time.

Good topic, keep em coming. I'm looking at joining after college - I want to be an officer. I want to salute the flag and wear the uniform with pride. I also want to see the world and get some experience under my belt. Hopefully I'll learn something about the world and be a better human being when I get out.

I've always wanted to be in the Air Force and when I was little I've always wanted to fly (be a pilot). But I joined the Air Force a little late for me to pursue the career of being a pilot in the AF. So here I am enjoying the life of enlisted corp, getting ready to test for NCO next year.

I joined to make a differance.

Bottom line that was it. Dont base a decision to join or not to join on a president. They will only be there for so long. Its about what is inside you. Its not good to be really politcal and be in the military, the job is stressfull enough without that.

Me, I joined for selfish reasons. Didn't want to go to college right out of high school. Wanted to see the world. Wanted something that no one else was doing. Wanted to be part of something elite and I really wanted some adventure. I got em all in varying degrees.

I just got out after 6 years enlisted US Navy (98-04) now I'm attending college full time on the government dime here at TN Tech U. I was underway for over 3 years (not continuously) been to 4 continents & 21 countries on 4 different deployments.

I'm currently US Naval Reserve as well as a non-contracted US Army ROTC cadet here the University. I'm even considering doing a Marine Corp PLC class this summer just for something to do while I'm out of school for that 10 weeks.

The patriatism and ability to serve my country was just icing on the cake for me. I was a patriot before I joined, but I'm not one for blindly doing as I'm told. I'm proud of my service and give all due respect to those that served and continue to serve (as should everyone). But I'm kinda glad that my full-time position is over and that I can do things that the Navy wasn't letting me do during my 6.

The reasons that I'm in the Air Force now, and when I joined are pretty different. When I was preparing to come in, I was applying for the Air Force ROTC scholarship. I decided that I wanted to be in, instead of waiting four to six years, and at the time, being in meant that we could get married sooner. Now that I'm in, I've met so many people that I'm proud to know, I work for some really good and hard working NCO's, and I feel good at the end of the day, knowing that I've acomplished something important. When the opportunity presented itself to me to deploy (not our rotation), I jumped at the chance to come over here. I love my job (2e2), I get a month of paid leave a year, all the holidays plus my birthday. That's beside the point though. I'm now in the military because of my family. I do my job because I know that if I do, they'll be safe that night. As much as I care about my friends, and as much as I care about my country, my real motivation is my family. That's the reason I'm in.

Oh, by the way, Viper, when are you testing for staff? From what I've heard, I can test in July , and had my waps material sent to me last month.

I'm sure everyone that raises their hand could damn near write a book on why they joined up. I was driving a tank at 17 in part to buy my camaro, pay for college, and break the cycle and not live in poverty the rest of my life.

I joined after graduating college because I couldn't find a job pertaining to my major. Came in enlisted, and after 8 years....I'm ready to get out. I've had plenty of good times, but lately more of the bad times. I'm leaving in Jan 05' to go to the middle east for the NINTH time!!! I've spent more time in the sandbox than any other place in the world. There are lots of advantages to being in the military, but with all the "force shaping" that's going on now, it's actually hard to get in the Air Force these days and get the job you want. I don't know how it is with other branches, but the AF is going down-hill. Everyone has their opinion on how good or how bad being in the service is, but for those of you thinking about it, this is my advice...."experience it for yourself and don't take to heart what others say....just because they've had a bad experience doesn't mean you will." Just like any other job out there....make the best of it and get paid!
Nitrous is like a hot chick with an STD....you wanna hit it, but you\'re affraid of the consequences...

http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/view_page.pl?page_id=244935

im not in the service, but did everything short of singing the contract. i was going to join as an alternitive to college. i knew i didnt want to go into workforce after hs, so i figured my options as college or army. since i couldnt pay for college i was going to enlist. since then ive been lucky enough to have family willing to pay for it. but i still can see my self in a govt job after college.
