LoL find one on ebay that is "clicking" or something. That would mean the internals have hit the platter, but there is a good chance the controller board is still good and should be a lot cheaper than trying to buy from quantum.
Is it still under warrantee? If it is, get an rma (sp?) from Quantum. When you get the replacement drive, swap boards, and spend back the new oen with the bad board. Done it before

Quantum doesn't make harddrives anymore. Maxtor bought their HDD division in 2001.

No the disk on these drives occasionally fail, but apparently, the very commonfailure is to have a burn-out on a Philips chip. The descriptions I've seen match exactly what happened on ours. The Philips chip burns in exactly the same place on each chip. I'm looking around for a replacement.

I wish. The drive is a a 15 Gig from 1999. If it was still under warranty, they'd have a boatload of trouble, based on all the identical failures I've read about.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Probably why they sold their division to Maxtor so they could handle all the returns/etc.

OK, so I found a guy in California who sold me his old Fireball. I took the circuit board off his Fireball and replaced my burnt circuit board with his board and.....
The Fireball lives!
We're busy copying data now.
