  • Smart computer people inside!

Alright, I've noticed we have a fair share of people in here that seem pretty computer savvy. I've got a couple questions for you guys.

    Question 1
My 6 year old computer doesn't like to boot. If the computer has been off for a while, when I turn it on, it will get to the XP loading screen then lock up. Sometimes it beeps and says, No OS found. After a few tries, its as if the computer "Warms up" and works just fine. If the computer has been running, I can shut it off and back on again just fine. Bad Motherboard, Hard drive, or something else?

    Question 2
I went into BIOS on my new computer and changed a temperature warning signal thingy because my computer was overheating. Thats all I did. Now when I boot the computer, it says "Changes have rendered the CPU unworkable, please see BIOS". It allows me to skip it with F1 and it boots and runs just fine. I also set all BIOS settings back to default and it still yells at me. WTF? I mean, I don't care, 'cause it runs fine, but im afraid I might be hurting something? And its a ***** to sit and wait to hit F1 just to boot it.

    Any help greatly appreciated. :D

(P.S. - Where can I get cheap computer parts?)

well, for #1 when you actually get it into windows, get a registry scanner/cleaner, you can find em a tucows.com that usually solves that for me....as for #2 depending on what you did, you might want to clear the cmos...check your mobo's manual sometimes theres a little button on the motherboard you can push other times you have to pull the battery and wait 5 minutes.

Q1 is a tough one. Almost sounds like the HD is taking too long to spin up.

Q2 - Did you fix the overheating problem?

Now this is a computer that was built for me. If I press a little button on the mother board, is it going to mess anything up?

As far as clearing the cmos, is there a generic way of doing that or do I have to check my manual? I'll check my manual, but will this mess up any settings? Im afraid to frig something up.

Yea, my cooler thing, I can't think of the name of it? The cooling fins on the processor were filled with dust because it has real fine copper fins. I just took the whole computer outside and sprayed it down with the air compressor. Problem solved.

your 6 year old computer is a dianasour, so get used to it. there should be a jumper near the batterey, change the pins its on for about 10 seconds, UNPLUG THE COMPUTER FIRST, AND DO NOT TURN IT ON DURING THIS PROCESS. it will just restore your cmos to the state it was in when it left the factory, you could also just have a failing motherboard
