• Had my first 'mac' experience yesterday

I'm learning Final Cut Pro (It's like Adobe Premeire on steroids) in school and it's only available on Mac, because Apple makes it. So I actually had some time to start working on it yesterday. Wow, all I can say is I had to throw 10+ years of working with a PCs out the window. Mac is nothing like Windows.

I felt like such a retard, it took me 30 minutes to realize the eject for the CD rom drive in on the keyboard, why did they put it there

It was weird not having a start menu, it almost felt like Windows 3.1 all over again. Something else that annoyed me was the mac version of the 'control' key was next to the space bar. The thing that really got me the most was right clicking, or rather the lack of.

Aside from my learning frustrations, I don't think it's that bad of a platform, The dock menu, I think that's what it's called, is kinda cool, but gets annoying at times. I haven't really used it enough to develop an opinion on it either way. I've always been anti mac, but mostly because I've never used it. First impressions are that it's not really as bad as people make it out to be. My next computer might be one, for editing purposes mainly. Since Final Cut isn't available for PC.

Yeah, my best friend got one. like a g5 or w/e it is. It isn't bad, i like it. but its like 90 zillion more dollars than i have, and a lot of things are very confusing. Such as installing programs, it took him three times to explain it and i still dont get it. and that dock menu is kinda odd, i couldn't figure out how to get like a web browser started. But its very stable compared to his windows system. i guess you'd just have to relearn a few things and shell out some dough

It took me a good two weeks to get used to everything on my mac.

I've been a mac owner since 2002. The only complaint I have is multitasking is nearly impossible. I'm going to max out my eMac with 1GB of ram, but I doubt that helps. It is an old G4 800MHz and doesn't hold a candle to my PC's speed, but I like doing schoolwork on this computer much better than my PC. It seriously never crashes and I haven't had to do anything with the computer since the day I first turned it on...unlike windows where I probably would have had to re-install it by now or format.

Mac is pretty retarded platform. I've used it in the past and never liked it. Lots of functions you take for granted on PC simply aren't there on Mac (like right click... I mean why did they use ONE button, instead of 2-3?...retards)

come to think of it... I'd rather use windowze and reinstall it like once in 2 years (which only takes like 20 mins anyway), instead of using retarded mac with it's gay OS.

Oh, and yeh - how many games are there for mac? lol

Thats why I own both. To solve the ****ty mouse problem, you guy buy another intellimouse and plug it into the USB port and you now have a wheel and right click.

I used to dread using a Mac but since my major is Graphic Design, I'm forced to use them at my college. The community college I first attended was all PC based which I loved, then I transferred over to the expensive school and all they have are Macs.

They really aren't too bad. I must admit, they really slow me down when I'm trying to be productive with things, but that's because I was brought up on computers when Windows 3.1 just came out. The visuals of OS X are very cool, but the dock does get in the way when you're trying to utilize the screen for Photoshop / Quark. Nonetheless, it's come a long way, and I don't HATE it completely anymore. ;)

I was forced to work on Mac's for my clients. I must say OSX is kinda cool. If someone gave me a Mac with OSx I might just take it. It does seem like Mac's were designed by glue sniffers though. Dragging your CD into the trash to eject it? WTF is that all about. Stupid crack heads.

Why not just get a mac emulator for PC if you want that program?

Wait until you start getting crashes :D
I know OX9 was terrible with them.. I had to use it in programming class for a full year.

So true!! The whole trash can thing is just retarded. That and single-button mice. WTF were they thinking

I've found a way around it though - install a Logitech mouse and mouseware and you get a real right click and a scroll wheel!

By day I'm a graphic designer and use a Mac all day at work. At home I have a PC, and I MUCH prefer the PC over the mac. Switching back and forth is quite tricky too, especially using Photoshop at home. I'm constantly hitting the wrong keys.

IMO PC's are faster, and more logical to use, etc, etc, and PC's cost me 1/4 what an equivilant Mac costs.

To each, his own. Most graphic designers perfer mac, I'm one who prefers PC. I feel there's nothing that can be done on a mac that can't be done on a PC (that cost half as much) just as fast, if not faster.

Congrats on your first taste of Macism.

Funny topic given I'm in CHI for OS X Server training :D

I to have both and prefer my Mac *cough*MT*cough*.

Fredless- What version of OS X are you using? and have you optimized it for your needs? Also, 1GB of ram will help! Apple turns lots of things on that you don't really need that will slow your machine down.. if you want to send me an Apple System Profiler report, I can tell you what you need to kill to make it faster ;)

I too have a problem with the 2 button mouse, but that is what the aftermarket is for, If Apple took that away from them, do you know how many vendors would *****??? And as for the clover key... it's no different than having to get use to the CTRL key on the damn pc, but I don't complain about it :-P

the mac interface is confusing? what i never could understand was why i have two trees to navigate on windows. there is that 'virtual' directory tree on the desktop and then the real filesystem underneath. completely brain damaged.

and windows is easy to integrate into your environment. atleast its easy if your environment is windows. compatibility with other equipment is a second thought.

and finally, the security and stability of windows is just stellar. does anyone remember the claims of m$ that NT had security in the "base implementation" allowing them to finally make a secure operating system. for a while, i was a member of the "patch of the week" club.

i have both. i use both--but not by choice.
