Oh, wait, but since that level of attack isn't focused at the Mac, they don't have to worry about patching that MULTITUDE of exploits that I'm positive are in the Mac OS.

Are you guys all that sure that the Mac is that much more secure than the PC, or is it that no one's really tried attacking the Mac on the level that the PC's getting nailed? Hmmm....

Are you guys serious about Xp? Windows Xp is rancid. It is like a bag of rats that has been delivered to your front door. Mac Osx isn't all that much better and neither is Linux. They all suck. The only difference is their varying degrees of sucking. I mean, all OS's are going to have holes. The only reason you hear about Windows's holes are the fact that everyone uses Windows. So everytime a hole is found, about like 90% of the planet is like Holy $hI7 We have to fix this. I'm sure Mac and Linux have the same problems, but they dont get the publicity that MS does. Most people use Windows because it is easy to use and just about EVERYONE uses it. Most software is Windows based too. Linux, or at least some versions like Mandrake, are really quite similar to Windows. They do the same things, they are stable, they work. It is just that Linux doens't have the name that Windows made for itself. Finally Mac is the least used. A lot of people I know hate Mac. I dont understand why. Just because it is different doens't mean it sucks that badly. Except for that clover leaf//Apple button ... that is kind of weird... Anyways, all three of these are OK OS's. I'm sure they all have their fare share of problems. But MS gets the most harp on their software b/c of their size and customer base. Thats why you hear everyone freaking out about every little bug in Window's code.

I personally don't have anything against Mac or any other platform for that matter. I'd use them all, but my personal preference is a PC running Windows XP Pro. What I don't dig is all the attacks on how "unstable" and "unsecure" the Windows platform is. If there weren't little "script kiddies" running around writing things that target MS based products, don't you think MS would have more time to devote to writing a better OS?

The MS hatred is so extreme there's people installing Linux on the Xbox. C'mon folks, it's a MS gaming system and it doesn't have any stability problems, so why mess with it aside from wanting to "get back" at the man?

Honestly, if the MS OS wasn't a valid platform, why didn't Mac dominate the market? The consumers spoke, and MS profited. Why is it when someone uses something that's non-mainstream, they think they're "revolutionaries" and everyone else is a brainless drone?

They're losers who want to think they're cool by doing it. Like billy really gives a **** if you install linsucks on an xbox.

Personally, I hate linsucks...red hat (when i used it for a short time) crashed as much as windows did, if not more. I know OSX is built on unix, but its far superior than any linsucks I've ever used.

                        Thats just my opinion.

                          sorry. wrong. thanks for playing.

first the above statement only applied to macos9. for os x, the bulk of the operating system is open source. no need to reverse engineer/disassemble interfaces to find potential holes. secondly, os x takes advantage of several mature technologies, such as mach and bsd (in paritcular freebsd). third, with open source, the code is available for review by everyone.

no, os x isnt perfect (like the safari/help expliot) but its not patch of the week.

actually, it kind of the other way around. m$ spoke and the consumers listened. further, once you start down the windows slope you cant stop. some applications and features only exist on windows and they are not open source/documented and cannot be duplicated on other computers. so once you have a little lead in the market share, people start targetting you with their applications. once you have applications that only run on your system, you get more market share. then, people start targetting your with their applications...

of course, IT groups want to support the lowest common denominator. this means, windows only. so you cant get anything else now. an example would be the NMCI (navy marine core internet) platform. this the officially supported and sanctioned platform -- its windows. to use anything else, you will need a paper justification (and approval). so now, the navy/marine-core is locked into windows. to be interoperable, other branches will need to use windows of course. i am sure m$ didnt do any lobbying in congress to make this happen.

So you're saying that because Mac OS is open source that it's not vulnerable to attack? You see, I was stating that if a group of people wanted to bust the Mac OS open like a ripe melon, Apple would be scrambling to patch up the holes. Would they not? Sorry, wrong, thanks for playing.

As for the NMCI, think about it. It has nothing to do with the lowest common denominator, it has EVERYTHING to do with cost. The military (believe it or not) is cheap. Why would they pay over $2K for a system, when they can get them for around $600 for a Windows platform PC?

chas, I'm certain that your views are objective when you're using MS-hater lingo such as M$... yeah, right.

as open source, its MORE vulnerable to attack. however, as open source, the code has been reviewed by more than just the (idiot) programmers at m$. (btw, ms is a disease, m$ is microsoft).

nmci has more to do with politics than cost. and if you believe the military is worried about the cost of a pc i have a bridge i would like to well you. further, i cant remember the last time we bought a $600 intel computer.

my views are objective and subjective. at the very least i have used windows, macos and unix/linux for over a decade.
