• Car shopping. Considering GTP

I went car shopping today, I found a really nice black gtp. Was a 98 that had 30k miles on it. Was so clean inside and out wasnt funny. Very small ding on passenger quarter panel that I only saw because the sun hit it perfectly (about the size of a dime). Wasn't really considering them as an option, but I took it for a test drive and was very impressed. They want 10k for it. Good price?

The other reason I was interested is my insurance doesnt budge much on it. ~100 a mo for full coverage at age 20. I dont know how, but I am not asking questions.

Any experiences w/ these cars? I read around, and most reviews on them are positive. Just lookin for more info. I'm not going to dash out and buy one tommorow, just considering my options.

Biggest things to watch out for is the transmission. Make sure it shifts properly and doesn't slip. Pull the transmission dipstick and smell the fluid, it shouldn't smell burned. Another thing is to take a listen to the supercharger, between the snout and housing. If you hear what sounds to be rocks bouncing around inside, the coupler's taken a dive and needs replacing (Around $40 or less, plus your labor and supercharger oil, 2 bottles at around $7 a piece). At that low of mileage, I don't think the coupler would be a problem. I don't know if the GTPs have a digital climate control, but 97.5-98 Regals with that option had quite a few units that had dimming or disappearing displays. The unit still worked, but you couldn't see the data. It's an easy fix if you know how to solder.

Outside of that, they're solid cars. My Regal is a kissing cousin to that GTP, so if you have any other questions, let me know.

My 99 GPGT only had a dead starter, covered under warranty. They also replaced the intake manifold gasket under "recal" even though it's for 97~98 cars. I think you wont be disapointed w/the gtp, in performance, gas milage, or the suprising size of the trunk. Does it have the bose system in it??? I've heard both & the bose sounds soooo much betteer

I hate the front wheel drive thing. You may or may not. I would get a newer fbody if I were you.

Ya.. I would buy a newer f-body for the rwd.. But the gtp was faster, about the same price, and would work nicer in the snow. The insurance is also a nice break.
I don't think I am going to buy the one I test drove, because the dealer was slimy. I have a local dealer that was willing to bend over backwards to sell me a nice car, was willing to work w/ my budget. No pressure. 10 minutes online I found 4 other gtp's w/ low milage in my price range.

Again, Thanks for the replies/options/expertise. First time buying a car for myself, its nice to have some help.

get payments done biweekly, it'll be an overall cheaper monthly payment, and lower payoff too.

Also look into the 2002+ 3.5L Altimas. My stepdad has one, it is one solid car. He bought it new, it has something like 25,000 miles and has had no problems. It's quick, spacious, cheap, good gas mileage, and good resale value.
