• Motor Trend: SRT-4 vs. Cobalt SS

Have you guys pick up an issue on Motor Trend on SRT 4 vs. Cobalt SS?

I was at a grocery reading up on it and waiting for my wife to finish her grocery. Much to my surprise, the Cobalt hang with the SRT 4 and matched it speed for speed. I thought the Neon would trounce the Cobalt because it has a slightly bigger engine, 25 more hp and a slightly higher boost.

But no, it did well and some cases even better. It corners better, it looks better (coupe looks better than 4 door), and it goes just as fast. Why because it's lighter.

It has a slightly better take off because it has no lag. Plus Chevy has plans of making it more powerful. The 272 Cobalt SS comes to my mine. 272 hp that is.

Many places have said that the Cobalt SS that is rated at 205 hp is putting just below 200 to the wheels, so the SS and SRT-4 are probably pretty close when it comes to actual power output. I guess we will just have to wait to see them show up to the track to see who is really faster.

And next year should be better for them. The ION RL and Cobalt SS should be getting the 252 hp turbo-Ecotec that the Sky and Solstice are getting :D

I read the article, and it did mention that the SRT4 that they were running was brand new, and that the numbers it produced (esp. in the 1/4 mi) were significantly effected by this. It didn't perform as well as they thought it should have.

With that said, I'd still rather have the Cobalt.

GM doesn't do turbo. Buick might bring it back but other than that, it is a root type SC. The 272 cobalt will still be a supercharged car. They've already introduced it at NOPI along with a 500 hp SC Cobalt running on stock engine.

Eh... just another econobox boosted to be way too fast for what they're good for.

Oh well, I guess that sort of thing is still "in"

Because our "sports car" is the base model. If you wanted performance, get a T/A, Z28, SS, etc...

I'd go with GM over Dodge any day

Those Cobalts are nice cars for the money... I have been considering picking one up after school, if I can afford a car payment.
