My motor is down to a bare block now, and when removing the number 2 piston, GM left me a little suprise. Take a look at a few pics:

While you completely missed the point of this thread... Yes and no. I cleared everything out of the way (wiring harness, brake lines, hoses, etc), raised the car, unbolted the k-member and shocks, lowered the k-member to the ground, lifted the body high enough to slide the engine/trans/k-member out from underneath, then pulled the trans off, unbolted the motor mounts, and put the motor on a stand. How on earth could I have stripped a motor down to a bare block with it in the car???

My opinion is that they started the motor on Friday, then came back and finished on Monday. I have the original build sheet, I should dig it out and see what day it was actually assembled on.

That's about retarded. Where are our engines made anyway? Did they ship them to canada or do the mess them up in house there?

Looks like you have a very stout motor there, to last so long missing a compression ring.

Are you sure you didn't vaporize it or anything? My pistons weren't that burnt and ugly when I took them out.

On the other hand, if you did break it apart, how could it have escaped the ring gap?

There have been numerous complaints about piston rings on LS1s, but this is the first time I have heard of a missing ring... damn.

On closer inspection, there is a lot of carbon in that ring slot, so you are right, the ring was never there. THat sucks.

Aren't LS1's supposed to have forged internals? that piston looks cast to me.
