  • Small Jobs Suck!

After 13 days, I was fired from Tires Plus.

    I was never late.

Apparently 3 days after I was hired, I was to be fired. I have never worked in a shop before, so this was a great learning experience. My job was to change oil, fix tires, mount tires and that sort of stuff. Well, I never done anything but changed oil on my own car. So again it was a learning experience working with many different cars. Well the first 3 days were slow for me. Their training program sucks. They made me watch a 2.5 hours of video of every proper procedure all crammped into 4 tapes. The videos make it look so easy, oil drain plugs come off with a simple twist of the wrist. Tires come off the rims with easy, lug nuts just magically come off and go back on easily. Oil filters magically appear in the easiest placees to reach. Every vehicle is shown easy to rack. And no one gets dirty at all.

Well I already knew this video was BS. and I couldnt remember many of the procedures they showed. Like the proper way to balance steel rims vs aluminum and the proper weights to use. So my first 3 days were slow and full of questions.

And the mexican guys that work there dont even follow the proper procedures, he told me i dont have to check certain things when really I was supposed to and I get my head chewed off for that after 2 days.

The 2nd day I worked there, it took me almost 2 hours to change this ladies oil because the guys up front kept asking me to pull in more cars and help other people with there cars, on top of that I needed approval on where to rack each car. But they ignored those facts and chewed me out because the lady was mad her car sat for 2 hours. I don't blame her. Everytime i went to work on her car someone was telling me to work on something else.

Well... after 3 days they told me I have to step up and work harder and bring more cars in. They said they would give me a week. And I did just that. I would have atleast 1 maybe 2 cars finished per hour. Still, after a week, i was still learning, id come accross cars and vans where i needed help. Sometimes I'd get a car with no key for the wheel lock. Or they would have a ticket that said the car had a flat but didnt say which tire, so i had to waste my time searching each tire for a friggin flat.

I was trying very hard. I worked a few 12 hour days with no breaks or lunch. Mostly 8-10 hours days. Everytime I asked for a lunch , they would ask me to do a favor and pick up a part for a customer. Then I'd come back and more customers would be their.

My check came and to me amazement of the 40 hours I worked, I made a whole $240.

On top of this they did not supply me with any work uniform. I had to use my own clothes. Each day when i was done id be covered in brake dust, grease, oil, dirt.

On top of all this, I got a flat tire on my car. I asked the manager how much it would cost to plug the flat if I worked on it. He wanted me to pay 25$!!!!!! I basically said, no thanks and went to the small local corner shop to get it fixed for 10$. I was on a spare for 3 days!

Because I was new the managers and the brown nose guys up front would talk mad crap to me. When my pen ran out of ink, I asked for a pen and this guy started saying stuff like "Jesus you cant even bring a pen to work, how are you going to make it in life." Or they would talk crap because I would have trouble removing a tire from a certain rim. The bead would just not lift off for me. And i didnt know the little tricks to use to make it lift easier.

Seriously, the guys up front would come up to me while I was working and just insult my intelligence out of the blue.

Also the little snot nose newbie mechanic that thinks he is big crap always had something smart to say to me. I was talking to a another guy about a mint GN I saw rolling down the street on my way to work and this young newb mechanic guy would come up and start saying that GN's are ugly and basically would call them crap. "He is a honda boy", Also the guys all up front drive Hondas. Even the main manager has a honda with rice crap in it. He's like 30 years old and a ricer!

The other mechanics and other workers were very nice and helpful, they never got rude with me when I asked them to help me out or when i asked a question. Except for the one young mechanic, he was a ***.

But, today I went to work, I was ready for another fun day, and they I get shot down with a "Sorry we have to let you go, the manager says that the money we pay you isnt worth the work you are putting out"

    its so BS!!!!!

Some people make it a practice to come across as intimidating as possible just to prevent what happened to you at your job. By the way you explained it, it seems you worked with a bunch of aholes and didn't resort to their shallow level of behavior. So it seems to me that you are destined for a better job and life than they are. Good luck.

Sorry about your experience bro. Everything you described I'm real familiar with. Except at my shop they didn't make me watch videos, someone trained me, and personally I think I learned better hands on. Shops differ from place to place you know don't let one bad experience deter you away from that type of work if you enjoy it.

Also a little tip: Buying your own tools helps tremendously, I'd suggest looking for them at tool shops though not off the trucks, that's me personally.

Wow what a bunch of tools. Sounds like they are just being wanks.

Find another job and keep at it. I'm sure you can find somewhere that isn't full of tools.

if you want to gain automotive experience, I highly recomend working at a dealership.

-you only have to learn and work on a set line of vehicles.
              -You are treated with respect
-YOu get to learn with hands on experience
-you get benefits, and a 1 hour lunchbreak.

Dealerships are just better and more organized than those terrible franchised shops like tires plus, jiffy lube, etc...

Were they paying you minimum wage?! That really sucks!

If you're just looking for any old job go to Wal - Mart... I work 40 hours a week and come home with over 300 dollars a week for very easy work.

If you want to go automotive, though (and I can't blame you), take malice's advice.

Yes, the training was a joke!

The manager and the sales guys never seemed to get an attitude with the bigger or older guys that worked in the shop. Only with me and the other guy that was slightly new. He worked at the same pace I did, but he was a bigger guy, probably a little older. When he made mistakes they just seem to ignore them.

It sucks when people get the idea and courage up to believe they can push someone around for fun. I think its unfair that people can talk trash because im skinny. Why can't I say stuff like "Your a fat ***, your one ugly obese dork. I you need to lay off the mcdonalds"

I know thats lowering to their level. But jesus, when someone gives hints to me like "Dude you need to eat, dude you need to lift weights, dude you are thin." Why is is so terrible if I say "Dude, you need to run around the block and lose some fat." I mean seriously, its like people already know I wont say something like that, its like they can see im a nice person and a good target to take free shots at.
