which is faster?
by how much?
reliability of either?
any other info?
the apartment I am moving into does not allow comcast to drill holes or something dumb
they only allow dsl so I would like to know what I am in for
thanks
Cable is faster by A LOT, especially if you are far from the DSL base station.
DSL is a steady speed, but slow. Cable will be a little more sporadic in the speeds, but will never drop below DSL speeds.
Plus comcast has one of the best backup systems, so if their cable ever does go down it is back in like 2 minutes.
Basically, unless you get BDSL, cable will always be faster. But then you can get business cable and be even faster... but for residential, cable is the way to go. Too bad you can't get it.
well I will be coming from dialup...
but I use cable alot :(
then again
I go from a dual 2.8 ghz comp T1 at work to a dialup laptop at home, so maybe I'll manage
Cable is usually 3 Mbps (3,072 Kbps)
DSL is usually 1.5 Mbps (1,536 Kbps)
Satellite is 400 Kbps (0.39 Mbps) down, 200 Kbps up
I've found cable to reliable, depending on your ISP, but I have no experience with Comcast.
Most phone companies will make you pay for a land line if you want DSL, even though its technically not needed for DSL. That may not sound like a big deal, but when you're a college student with a cell phone, another $25+/month might put a hurting on your wallet.
Satellite is a last resort for people living out in the middle of nowhere.
I would find a way to get cable. Won't you have cable TV?

they have it wired for a specific company and wont let you use comcast
you can get satellite (dish network, directtv ect.) for the tv and sbc dsl for the internet
I have sbc and I like it alot. Its fairly fast, but most people have very slow upload speeds. My fastest download was at 2Mb's per second off of microsoft 1 night.

So you can't get cable TV? </font>[/QUOTE]they have a specific company that they use
I'm not sure what it is
there is a cable box hard wired into the apartment, but it only works for one company
I will get satellite tv for sure, I'm not about to give a company business that has worked a monopoly deal with the complex
Why not try to get cable internet through that company then? I can sort of understand not wanting to give in to their monopoly.
My apartment complex has a deal with a local company to provide internet access that's included in the rent. It was so slow and went down so much that we *****ed and complained until they took it off our rent, and and we went and got cable internet.

the cable comapny they have doesnt offer interntet
it's a wierd situation
the best option I have is sbc dsl
thats why I was asking specifically about that
the only other type of internet I can get is satellite or dialup
I have the sbc dsl and it's pretty fast. we also have the option of cable internet, but the picture is so crappy, they aren't getting any more of my money. I also like the ability to talk & peruse teh quality internet sites at the same time.

DSL is usually 1.5Mbit AT THE STATION.
If you're a mile away, you'll get 1/3 that speed.
I think 1.5 miles is the limit, at which you'll get dial up speeds.
Cable is the way to go... too bad you can't have it.
I also have SBC DSL, I am pretty satisfied with it. Comcast offers cable internet, but unlike some others opinions, Comcast SUCKS!!! I haven't had comcast in my house for over 6 years. Lousy customer care, crappy reception, installation that takes hours. I wouldn't want Comcast back in my home for anything, even if it was free. Rather pay for something that works, then get something that doesn't work for free.
