Rather pay for something that works, then get something that doesn't work for free.
That is weird, because we have Comcast in Tulare and it is AWESOME. It is wicked fast and NEVER goes down... never had a single problem with it.

i think you can buy as much bandwith as you want with DSL right? you pay more for faster speeds? Also, u never have to worry about peak times, for your connection will always be consistent. No worrying about everyone in the neighborhood being online. One thing I've heard sucks is that when the weather is bad, watch out

well with the mixed opinions that I am getting I think they will at least be comparable
thanks for the replies
I will get the SBC and I guess if I'm not happy I'll cancel it

I've had comcast cable modem for about 3 years with minimum interruptions. The customer service is decent, but I rarely have to call them, so it doesn't really matter.

I'm buying a new house tomorrow and comcast is not the local cable provider. There's some small mom-n-pop shop and they have nothing until spring :(

My hope is that the house is within distance of verizon and I can at least get DSL. If not, it's back to dial up for me :(

If anyone knows of broadband in Middletown, DE, let me know!

well I've had my DSL for awhile
I got the "pro" version for 29.99 a month with a one year contract
I have a year lease anyways so f it
I did some speed tests
best one was 3.84Mb/s
worst one was 2.34Mb/s
(and this but im not sure how it translates 967.1 Kbps - You)
my uploads suck tho like 50kbps or something dumb
overall I cant tell the difference between this and cable that I have used at other peoples houses
my 1394 connection thing says 400mbs

Mb/s = Mega bits persecond
my cable is 5 Mb/s
Kbps = Kilo bits per second
my cable is 5000Kbps

Kb=Kilo bites
5000 kbps /8 bits per byte = 625KB/s

KB = Kilo BYTES
by time i add over head i should, at top speed, be able to down load half MB (mega byte) per/second

so don't let the big number fool you... be sure you know what number your looking at

bps (bits) is the "profehional" way to look at speeds..

Bps (Bytes) is just easier for most poeple to unstand how much info they transfering in one second since everthing in computer is mostly advertised in KBps

1 MB(Mega Byte)= 1024 Kilo Bytes or 8192 bits

note B=byte and b=bit

also note MANY places often use "B" when it really should be "b".
read carefully and make sure you know what you buying

i know most of you know just trying to help anyone thats new to it.

you have 120.8 Kilo Bytes a second not a bad speed for dsl

my cable on a good sever is about 400-600 Kilo Bytes sec :D

yep, but you can only have a wire of that that is a few yards long or you start losing that speed quick. Firewire is good but only for attatching things that are within the same room.

basically for someone to use your connection like this they need
1) a IP addy that YOU told the router is ok
2) the subnet mask (can figure this out if they have ip
3) the need the DNS severs that you will enter into the router also, the router will not talk to any machine that does not have these numbers

DSL = Garbage

Wireless Networks = Garbage

Cable, cat5 is the way to go.

Setup a wireless p2p network between 2 computers and tell me how fast a 10gb file transfer is.

Then do it with cat5.

The difference is...

Wireless would take close to 3-4 hours to transfer 10gb of data.

Cat5 would take around 25 minutes to transfer 10gb of data.

But with a basic cable internet connection using a wireless router. You won't really tell the difference because you will only be allowed around 3mb to 5mb downstream and 500kb upstream. Roughly with an average cable company like timewarner.
