Getting extremely pissed

So I have had my 98 Bird for about 3 weeks now! Well since then it has been nothing but a pain in my ***! Since I have had it I have had to replace the two rear tires (not from abuse) but because the driver side rear ballooned up and was all lopsided n stuff...K so 242 dollars later I have 2 new tires. Then I decide to take it to the track and make a couple passes, so I am driving home from the track and it starts missfiring and throwing codes. I get it scanned and it comes up as a cylinder #5 misfire.

I change the plugs and wires figuring it had prob. never been done and figured that would be the problem, start it up, whaddya know the miss is still there! So then I replace the Fuel Injector and it actually seemed to be good for about a week anyways...Well about an hour ago it starts missing again and throwing codes.

I go get it scanned again, and guess what?!! CYLINDER #5 MISSFIRE!!!!!!! Gawd damn I got a friggin lemon!!!! And the lemon law here is only 15days so Im screwed!

Only a few things can cause misfires: plugs, wires, coils, ignition module... I think thats it.

It's all just little things man, it happens. I just replaced my coils and wires just in time for my tranny to die. Tranny was about $1100 to fix only because my dad and I took it out only cost me $200 for the rebuild hehe. Anyway, every car has problems, and those are just routine maintenance problems [img]smile.gif[/img]

yea uhhh... dont replace 1 injector, replace all

but a misfire wouldnt be caused by a a fuel problem

I just had a nasty misfire on cylinder one, my pvc thingy majaggor on the intake manifold was smoking heavily afterwards. I immediately went to checker auto, they did a free code scan. Found out it was a misfire. I replaced all the coils right away. Car runs normal now.

Misfire means what it says "Fire Missed" No spark.

The best is when you have multiple misfires, that always sounds great on an engine [img]smile.gif[/img]

Hmm so your telling me that if it was firing, yet there was no fuel being dumped in the cylinder that it wouldn't cause a similar problem?

dude, a misfire is lack of spark in the cyl. either the plug, wire, or coil is bad. chances are its the coil. my #5 went bad also. go to autozone with some tools, have the check engine light reset, take the #5 coil off (middle one) and switch it with the first one. if it jumps to a cyl. #3 misfire when the ses light comes back on, its a bad coil.

A misfire is when the it doesn't "fire" hence make a spark. If there is no fuel being dumped into the cylinder it would be impossible for it to combust. If there was no fuel/not enough fuel being dumped in the cylinder you'd throw a lean code, not a misfire code.

^^^ You have a point, I wasn't referring to the specific codes, but just saying that if it was still firing yet no fuel was being dumped in the cylinder (lean) That it would still cause the engine to run on 5 cylinders.

yup but think about - what's easier to replace - a coil or an injector? If certain problems can have few things going wrong to cause it, you start with cheapest, easiest, most logical and then and go up to hardest.

Best example.

As for testing the coils, try just swapping one.

As an example(I ahven't looked at it 100%) swap it with another coil, if the coil is bad you will get a misfire on the #3 cylinder instead of #5.


I you coudl I woudl check out the wire, our cars are known to eat up wires.

I fixed it the other day, it ended up being a coil...Thanks for your help everyone.
