So Gorbachev came to our school and did a speech. So the morning of the speech (he did it at night), I was chillin in the history dept. where I work a couple of days a week in the morning. So in walks a dean and he's like "you work here?"
Me: "yes I do"
Dean: "Good, you are drafted."
Me: "what's up?"
Dean: "You know where the airport is?"
Me: "yep."
Dean: "Good, you are going to go help President Gorbachev with his luggage."
:D
So, a few minutes later we were on the way to the airport. We waited prolly 15 minutes and then Gorbachev and his entourage arrived. As a draftee, I was also part of the welcoming comittee. We had gift bags, etc. to give to the people. So we gave the bags out and then Gorbachev came around and shook all the people's hands, ladies first, then the men. Impressive.
So we hauled all the stuff from the jet to his hotel and took all his stuff and the other peoples stuff up to their rooms (under the supervision of a KGB type, one of his bodyguards). Luckily, I understood enough Russian to get the job done, and spoke some, but thought it better to not make a fool of myself.
Speech went good, then this morning it was just the opposite. Took his stuff to the airport, he arrived a little later, shook everyone's hand and they were off. Pretty cool.
I'll have to remember this cause I am a history major, and met one of the most important people as far as the Cold War (particularly the end). It was cool to meet somebody like him, especially around here.
