Look what landed on base last night

Thats pretty sweet.

I go out surfing at Playalinda Beach pretty often, which is just a few miles north of KSC. Its all private beach so there's no hotels or buildings to obstruct the view, just beach and wetlands I guess you could call it. On the way out there, and even in the water, you can see the shuttle and the launchpads clear as day. Its pretty cool. Never really thought about taking pictures though, I guess here in Florida you get used to seeing it.

Yeah, I used to live by Ocala, and you could see the launches, but I was never close enough to actually see the crawler or anything. I've also never seen one attached to a plane before either

i wonder who thought of tacking the space shuttle on top of an airplane doesn't seem that safe...but i guess its better than floating it down a river or towing it

How else do you expect them to get it from cali to Florida? They certainly can't transport it on the ground, the thing is as wide as a highway.

The wide wingspan wouldn't be the only problem. Can you imagine the type of security that has to go with the shuttle? I can't imagine what kind of safety and security issues would go along with pulling that thing down the highway. Viper was right though, if they wanted to all they need to do is jack it up enough on a trailer so that people can drive under it. They won't be going under any underpasses for sure though.

I saw teh shuttle piggyback @ Dyess a few yrs back. It was actually parked pretty close to teh access road, but well lit.

It's a shroud for the engines. No idea why they need to protect it. Doesn't that thing fly like 10x's faster straight up than it does on the back of that 747? :D

Anyways, cool pics. Reminded me of my time as a kid out in Palmdale, CA, watching the shuttle land and looking at it getting set up on the 747.

I was talking about the cylinder lookin things on the ends of the stabilizer on the 747. I figured the cone on the end was either for protection or something else.

How amazing would it be to be part of that kind of a project? I would love to be able to work with something special like that. At the same time it scares me though. Think of how nerveracking those jobs must be, you gotta get every SINGLE detail perfect at NASA. No screwups at all.
