• Dual Channel Memory on a board that doesn't support it?

Does anybody know if this will work?
I buy 2 sticks of 512 RAM that are dual channel
Board doesn't support Dual Channel

Will RAM still function?

Or should I just buy 2 individual sticks?

This is my mobo:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...il.php?UID=341

I am asking because the price difference between buying 2 single sticks or the dual channel sticks is VERY ****ED UP.

As seen here:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...tCode=80032-15
$180 for the dual channel sticks (both!)

but to get 2 seperate 512 sticks will cost $120 a piece!
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...ductCode=80060

It looks to me that the Dual Channel Memory is 2 of these sticks:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...tCode=80060-13
Which are $163 EACH!

The dual channel will be saving me money... I just don't know if it will work.

I can also get this RAM:
http://www.directron.com/ocz333512r32.html
Which says its better than Corsair, and is also cheaper. Those are $112 a piece. The dual channel setup for that OCZ RAM is $253.

So... whill the dual channel ram work in my computer?

Dude... I don't know what you're doing, but go to www.pricewatch.com

I can get a 1GB Generic DDR333 2700 stick of RAM for under $110....

I kind of like buying name brands though, I am a label whore :(

Is it not worth it for me to buy the better RAM since I do play a lot of games?

Guess for that price I could get 2 gigs of generic RAM... but 1gb is already a lot...

There's no way I would ever buy generic ram. Stick with the good stuff that's proven to be stable when overclocked.

Well I can cram 3GB in there

I am not going to overclock anyway, I just don't want to deal with sluggish RAM or having it go bad all the damn time...
It will be going along with a new 3000+ Barton chip.. fastest chip my board will support

Feck I don't know wtf I want to do.

dual channel is entirely up the the board. dual channel mem is just a gimmick. you can have any supported stick of ram on a board with or without dual channel mem and it will work.
its all about channel bandwidth, so its like asking if there's special harddrives for a raid application.
in short, yes you can buy whatever ram and have it work on whatever board. Supposing that its the proper fitting ram.

I reread my post and its not exactly clear
any mem will work with a dual channel setup but it does have to be a pair for dual channel to work at 400mhz. if there's 4 sticks it has to be 4 same brand/speed/latency

yeah PC2700 (or DDR333) is the fastest RAM I can go, so I just wanted to know if the RAM that is meant for dual channel will work even though my board does not support it.

So basically they will function like 2 regular sticks of RAM?

BTW - From my understand, Dual Channel Memory will only help if the FSB of the processor is fast enough... like using dual channel DDR400 with an intel running at 800mhz.

my board will be running at 333 FSB and RAM will be at 333 as well, so the dual channel will not benefit me... it is just cheaper

As long as your mobo supports Corsair then it will work. If you mobo doesn't support dual channel then you won't get the "benefits" (the performance gains are minimal on an AMD setup) but it should work. Corsair makes quality ram, you shouldn't have a problem.
