Ok the building I live in is having network problems. One router that has 2 lines that go to one hall way and the other one goes to the otherside. It was fine for a while but now, we are having interent problems. Everytime I log my computer on everyone else's AIM goes down and my internet doesnt work harldy at all. In the mournings though mine works fine and no seeems to have issues (very few poeple on at that time). I rebuilt my computer hoping to solve a issue, but it did noithing. Im pretty sure if i would just hook up my computer straight to the cable modem it would work fine.
A message came up and said someone has a conflicting ip address with you but that is very rare.

So far im thinking someone is conflicting with me, and when it does it messes everyone else up. I don't understand why AIM is affected and only my interent seems to die.

In the case of IP addy conflict (duplicate IP's), it shuts both IP addresses (or however many) down.

Perhaps too, maybe something on the network is utilizing most/all the bandwidth?

Tried resetting the router? (is it really a router or a switch/hub?)

Try having everyone use DHCP? Are these people able to cooperate with you or are they just dumb users?

This is an interesting yet frustrating problem. I am having a similar problem - when one of my servers is running, my desktop has problems. It's only a matter of time before I track it down... I hope.

I wonder if the solution to your problem might also be the solution to mine.

        umm
100 bucks says each router is givving out the same defualt IP addys so all the IP are duped

the routers must be on different subnets to work.... like your saying they are hooked up...
or you must install a link between the routers, then using the subnets let the router pull the IP's from that......

he must be using routers cause switches look only look to layer 2 the MAC addy that why switch have less "lag" or latency.

or its a layer 3 switch.

if you can get in the router or give me the ip and let me telnet to it i'll fix it for you ;) (also need the PW)
