• And the plot thickens....

    Cliffnotes:

Went on a 4 day off road 4 wheeling adventure/camping trip w/ the '79. Had a great time, truck did great on some really tough trails, but the engine started burning oil on day 3. On the way home, it started burning 1qt every 50 miles, and I was 250 miles from home. It's belching black smoke out the tailpipes now, and the pressure's barely 30psi when it's full of 5qts of 20W50 syrup oil.

    So the time has come....

And "the beast" is getting a low-budget 383 stroker buildup.

    Stay tuned......

You can't just leave it at that. What do you plan on doing?

You can't just leave it at that. What do you plan on doing? </font>
Still in the planning stages. It's gonna be built for shear torque, not so much high-rpm horsepower because it's used for off-road, lower-rpm climbing, and occasional towing. I'm starting to gather ideas of what parts I want, but I'm shooting for 350-400ftlbs of torque and 250-300hp for under $1500. I'm reusing the block, intake, carb, heads (but porting/polishing & rebuilding valve train) and distributor.

        Like I said, stay tuned

I've gotta get my garage/shop built first...

                    STFU, Bish ;)

Notice I said "low budget"? Stroking a 383's one of the best and least expensive ways to get more torque out of an small block.

Interesting... what did you cook? Think you blew out a ringland?

383 should be good, just watch the cam you go with, that will make the biggest difference in torque... what am I doing.. you already know that.

                          Keep us updated....

And let me be the first to say....

I'm not sure what went to be honest... all I know is I've been having oil pump problems and gasket leaks since the day I bought it, and the smoking has got progressively worse. This trip was the final straw.

I'm gonna research the best cam specs for my needs while my garage is being built over the next month or so. Once the garage is built, I will pull the motor, tear it down, and let the fun begin. Pics will then follow.
