Police ticket pregnant wife delivery driver, nurse claims

Ok this happened in Wichita, KS my sister is an RN there @ Wesley medical center. Well the story is this guy got pulled over for speeding and his wife was in labor(don't know about you but I think I would be too) ok you would think that either cop would say be careful or better yet give them a police escort. No they tell him your waiting here and your gonna get a ticket and we will call an ambulance for your wife. Well during this time the cops were sitting in their patrol car laughing. Well the lady gives birth in the elevator on the way to the delivery room and starts to bleed out. They end up giving her 3 pints of blood and doing emergency surgery on her.

Well the guy is taking them to a grievance commitee over it.

Can't say that I blame him either I would make sure they are looking for a new job.

I just would have speed off and delt with the police later. Im not going to jeapordise my wifes life, or the babies for a meesly ticket or even jail time. I pity the wife of that man for him not taking action himself and letting some "police officer" tell him what to do.

That's why you have a cell phone and call dispatch to let them know what's up! I'm sure the dispatcher would get on the tele and call the shift supervisor... :D

MASSIVE LAWSUIT

Seriously folks, this is why people are allowed to sue... its not to protect people from burning themselves on hot coffee, it is to compensate people for this sort of gross negligence and endangerment of human life. A police officer should know better--and those officers should be fired. Unfortunately for the city, a complaint will not cause them to fire those cops... but a fifty million dollar settlement will. If that's what it takes to get them out of uniform then that's what it takes.

I read the thread title and thought to myself, "oh wow another guy got a speeding ticket", but I sure wasn't expecting this. That's a very sad story, and while I don't think most cops are like that, that pair does need to learn some priorities in life.

somehow, i find that story to be a good deviation from the truth. you can tell the same story and it sound perfectly logical.

"guy got stopped for 120 in a 30 and passing people on the shoulder. the police stopped him and found out there was an actual emergency. the police followed their policy and notified an ambulance since they didn't want this guy killing anyone, especially the pregnant wife. the guy got a ticket because honestly, an ambulance won't do 120 in a 30 and pass people on the shoulder."

i've been there before. people think they're perfectly legal in their actions, when in fact, the PD probably got 15 phone calls on some maniac driver who ran them off the road. you don't have lights and sirens, don't drive like an azz. and the days of "police escort" are long gone. like some department is going to accept liability for the way this guy drives. depending on the severity of the violation, i may have written him as well. i'd have also called an ambulance and waited for them. if it's a big enough emergency for this guy to drive like an idiot, it's a big enough emergency to wait 2 more minutes for paramedics who can handle the problem while on the way.

Two minutes for paramedics to arrive? On what planet? It takes much longer than that for the "average" response. You hear reports in the news about it taking an hour or longer. Granted, those are the extremes, but typical wait times are not uncommon to be half an hour or more.

Heck, in some cities (like D.C.) you end up sitting on hold for up to 15 minutes when you call 911.

In a perfect world the police did the right thing (if the guy truly was driving extremely dangerously), but this world is not perfect, nor is this nation's emergency response system. More likely he was doing 15-20 over.

More likely he was doing 15-20 over. </font>[/QUOTE]around here, the average response time is under 2 minutes. it might go up to 4 during peak traffic times, but usually stays close to 2. if it actually took 30 minutes for an ambulance, i wouldn't wait.

in this day and age, you can't do like the cops on TV anymore. if you let the guy go and he continues driving like an idiot, you can get sued because A: you knew there was an emergency, B: you failed to act by not calling an ambulance, and C: you let him go knowing there was an emergency and that he would continue to drive crazy. it's kind of one of those damned if you do and damned if you don't situations. i always hold them up and call an ambulance.

a lot of people i stop claim to have some emergency. if it is, i'm calling an ambulance. if it isn't, you're getting a ticket before you leave. it may be an emergency to them, but in reality, you have no business driving like that.

a guy i stopped a few weeks ago told me his wife called and said someone was breaking into his house. ok, now i have this 'duty to act' thing going on so i have to investigate. i ask the guy if she called the police and he said he wasn't sure. i get his home number and call his wife at home.

"this is officer X with XPD. is everything ok there?"
"sure, is something wrong?"
"no. when did you talk to your husband last and what did he say?"
"he called a few hours ago and said he'd be home when he left work."
"ok, well he's on his way home and i'll let him explain why i'm calling."

the guy was going 101 in a 65. it's crap like that all the time. had someone been breaking into the house, the PD needed to be notified and she needed to be contacted to find out more information. i commonly run into the scenario where someone is rushing to the hospital because their relative just got admitted. i ask what for? they tell me the relative called and said they had a headache. is this enough to drive stupid? to hear it from the person being stopped, they'll tell you how mean i was for not escorting them to the hospital.

i've been doing this a while and been an EMT since 1996. i know an emergency when i see one.

Also DV on the speeding part the guy wasn't being wreckless I believe it was like 70 in a 55 on the highway. Don't remember the exact speed he showed them the ticket when he got to the hospital. I agree with you on the 20+ over the speed limit but I don't consider 15 over to be to wreckless.

That is kinda a bold statement there these "dumb@ss" nurses are the ones that save your life when you get shot or hurt in a car wreck. Considering people do live from these things you might wanna reconsider your statement. Because your saying all nurses are dumb@sses I'm saying those cops are @ssholes mine is pretty d@mn specific. It also isn't so much that they did what they did it was more that they found it funny. I don't know about you but I would be just a little pissed off about that myself.....

Two incidents from my past come to mind:

1. A few years back when I lived in a not-so-nice part of Norfolk (heh, like Norfolk has any nice parts) my neighbors called my cell saying my apartment was getting broken into. I called 911 and the Norfolk PD dispatcher said she was sending a unit "immediately". Bear in mind Norfolk, VA is not that large of a city though it is pretty dirty and crime-ridden... it takes about 20-30 minutes tops to drive from one end of the city to the other in traffic. I got home in half an hour after the incident was long over, one unit showed up 15 minutes after me.

2. Last year I saw a coworker outside my office slip and fall, he hyperextended his knee and possibly broke his leg. He was lying on the ground unable to move in quite a bit of pain. I rushed inside and had the security guards call an ambulance. I didn't know the guy that well, he worked in another department, but I came out and stood there anyway making sure he was alright. People were just walking by saying "wow" and kept going on their merry way without offering to help at all. Time passed and he kept groaning about how bad it hurt. After half an hour I finally said forget this and brought my car around from the parking garage. Another coworker recognized us and helped him into my car. I drove him to the hospital down the street (not very far, 3 miles in traffic--I was doing a good 10-15 over, it took maybe 6 minutes) and dropped him off at the ER. I got back to the office feeling good about myself for being a good citizen. The guards called me shortly afterwards--an hour and fifteen minutes after the incident--saying "we have an ambulance here, where's the guy who got hurt?"
