There are a lot of views and a lot of different opinions. It still does not change the fact that we do not have all the facts about the posted topic. As far as I can tell, everyone is just assuming they know what hapened.

good samaritan laws are interesting but i doubt that they would hold up in a civil court.

lets say you are helping someone to the hospital and due to your reckless disregard for traffic laws, you wind up in an accident and your passenger is further injured. are you exempt? the answer is no, since you did not exercise due regard for the safety of your passenger. this exemption can be easily extended by the current crop of legal professionals.

as for emergency response times you are prioritized by the dispatcher. someone (maybe!) is breaking into my unoccupied apartment. low priority. someone fell and broke their leg. low priority. high priority? someone is breaking into my apartment and i am in it. someone has a compound fracture and is bleeding out. none of the people in the anecdotal evidence appear to have suffered unduly due to this classification of 'emergencies' (execption the pregnant woman/speeding story which is currently iffy since its third party so i cant say what's going on there).

however, dc's response to 911 is awful. dont live there. fairfax isnt bad. they get to auto accidents pretty damn fast.

i'd just like to interject that in Vermont, in a populated suburban area, it took 45 minutes for paramedics to get to a car accident i was in, where my dad was trapped inside the car all cut up and crushed and i was cut up all over and half-conscious. Where I live, waiting for the police/paramedics can be life or death

Civil court is exactly where Good Samiritan Laws are designed to protect you at.

Personally, if I feel I could get someone to help faster than an ambulance would arrive I would take them myself. If I feel an ambulance can arrive quicker than I could get someone to help then I would wait for an ambulance.

Whether a person gets a ticket in the situation in the original post is a judgement call by the officer. Like everyone else police officer's personalities vary so some would ticket and some wouldn't. I am sure this scenario happens many times a day in jurisdictions across the country. Most times you hear nothing about it because the officer handles it in a respectable way (to the perception of the average citizen). You only hear about the cases were the officers judgement differs from what most people would have done.

Also, when you hear these stories please be aware there are two sides to every story. You only heard one version of events told by people that are biased towards their opinion.

I would say that whole speeding thing would depend on how fast the person was going and how bad of an emergency was it. I would sue the cop since it was bad enough, the woman almost died, he should have called the hospital and told them they were coming and give a police escort. It depends on how bad it is, if the woman was just sitting there and her water had just broke then he did the right thing, but from what it sounds like she was in more pain and further into labor than just water breaking.
The whole helping people out or waiting for ambulance is just judgement, there is no fully right or wrong action. Once again severity of situation comes into play.
Finally if the guy was recklessly driving, say 20 over the speed limit, then he the cop has the right to slow his *** down, that is dangerous driving and could kill someone, if the guy was not over the limit, then he shoudl have escorted him.

the fact of the matter is this. noone knows how fast the guy was going. to grossly endanger everyone on the road, himself, his wife, and his unborn child is foolish for something like childbirth, which CAN BE DONE OUTSIDE OF A HOSPITAL!

like stefan and others said, 10-15 over is fine, w/ slight agressive driving. but 50 over running people off the road is nuts.

Well, you guys should drive in fairfax area. Here, some roads say speed limit is 35... and if it was same road, say, in maryland, the speed limit would be 55, I kid you not. You can safely go 65 on that road.

See, what you guys fail to realize is what government thinks is right for us... is not what always best for us... quite often it happens to be overreacting by idiot lawmakers. I'm going to run for the office when I get older, time to give people a little more freedom.

Citizens don't always need police officers. Especially the ones in this story and the ones like yourself. Some citizens take actions in their own hands depending upon situation. You aren't godsend, dumbass, you were granted autority by CITIZENS. When are you going to realize this?
WTF is your problem w/ cops, especially DV? He doesnt act like he thinks he's a godsend, he explains the law to idiots like you who think they should be able to do whatever the **** they want. I hope sometime you get injured/attacked and there are no cops around to respond.

no way in hell you'll get voted into public office
