        it didn't help that the cop parked his car wrong. He should have been closer to the road than he was, with his wheels turned toward the road. (at least that's what i learned during 9 years of ride alongs and training (junior law enforcemnt group)) That way if someone did come close, they would have whacked the trooper car and with the wheels turned out there my have been a chance that the cop car rolled forward but into the road still protecting himself and the motorist. Any people that are law enforcement feel free to correct me if i'm wrong. either way WOW.

          On the first video, his vehicle position looked correct; there is more than one way to make a stop, and yes, turn the tires toward traffic (usually). It looked like he may have had his wheels turned correctly. Turning the tires also acts as a barrier for gunfire. Most officers use a 20' back and offset to the left with a tactical left side walk-up. Take-down lights are aimed to point directly into the vehicle interior 20' away (usually).It looked like he offset his vehicle to the right and did a tactical right side walk-up, which is great for high traffic and it suprises people. Right before the crash, the officer did not move to the post ahead position correctly, but that may be because he heard the car coming. Its easy to watch the video and critique, but living it is a different story. After a few years of vehicle patrol, an officer becomes relaxed in his/her techniques.

            I feel really bad for the cop in the 2nd clip. If you look closely on lower right hand side corner, you can see he could never get up :( . He was tossing and turning in pain. My dad's friend had the same situation like the 1st clip. Now, he doesn't even park on the shoulder anymore. He goes past shoulder, past grass and park close to the woods (where available).

              How bad of a driver do you have to be to HIT a parked car with LOTS OF FLASHING LIGHTS! I know it happens, but I just can't imagine how incompetent you have to be to do it.

                the way I was taught in school is if your are driving like you are suppose to, your hands should follow yours eyes. its a trick to keep you watching the road. but if you look away fromt eh road you sill steer in that direction. kind of a stupid thing to teach IMO

                    That reminded me of something that happened the other day: after doing donuts in the road, i pulled over in the grass for about 30 seconds to look at my tires and see how worn down they got. After smelling smoke, i pulled back out onto the road and saw that a large circle of grass was on fire,aparently where my cat was. So its probly not a good idea to park in the grass either.

                      I don't think that's right. I recall them saying to keep your eyes moving at all times or else your hands would follow your eyes. That is, don't stare to one side or you will drift.

                      Those videos are disturbing. One of my good friends is a cop. People should slow down when anyone is working on the side of the road.

                        Back when I went through tactical driving classes, the instructors beat into our heads the fact that if you look at a cone you will hit it; that is sometimes true. About two years ago, a couple of deputies from our dept. parked in a field with their impalas to meet up with our wildlife officer. They went with our wildlife offcer to a location that was possibly growing marij. when they returned, the impalas were a flaming pile of metal. The investigation turned up the fact that the cats caught the high grass on fire, not the drug dealers. Also, it is a proven fact that people under the influence are sometimes drawn towards flashing lights like flies to a bug zapper.

                          How did the catalytic converters starting a field fire have anything to do with this conversation? LOL.

                          Anyone that's ever rode a motorcycle knows that you turn where you look, that's why you don't look at oncoming traffic, and also why you look through the corner to where you want to be. :D

                          Maybe if these drivers would move over to the far lane, they wouldn't have caused those accidents.
