when I bought my last phone I wanted a Razr, but they were like $500 at the time. Now all the principles and the loaner phones in the office are Razr's........ very cool phone.

You can now get them with T-mobile as well. If you want a nextel DC phone, you have to buy through nextel.

Guy I work with has it with Verizon.

I would guess they only work on networks like Cingular, Verizon, etc. Sprint's network is different, and maybe Nextel and T-Mobile use both.

I think only specific phones made for Nextel can do the direct connect thing.

Verizon and Cingular are two totally different systems. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, Cingular and T-Mobile use GSM, and Nextel has their own system called iDen that isn't compatible with any other phones.

You sure he has verizon? Because I know they don't offer this phone.

Sprint and Nextel merged recently so who knows what will be going on with their services.

Just because Verizon doesn't offer a phone doesn't mean it can't be used on their network. In fact, he told me he got it from them, and that they don't offer insurance on it because it's so expensive.

Actually, it's my understanding that Sprint uses a totally different system with their PCS phones. Apparently, my Cingular phone uses GPRS, not GMS.

Here's the deal guys... Normal Razr phones do NOT WORK on Verizon. Motorola has just come out with a CDMA Razr phone that is not currently available in the U.S., but you can buy it on wirelessimports.com for like a ton of money. Also, as far as I can tell the CDMA Razr only works on Verizon, not on sprint.

Forget that price! I'll hold onto my i730 for a bit longer then.

Thanks to all for the responses!

</font>[/QUOTE]PCS is just the 1900 mhz band of CDMA that Sprint uses, so they still use CDMA technology. All new Cingular phones use GSM, but GPRS is the data transmission component of GSM phones. GPRS is being replaced by EDGE for data, but it still uses GSM networks.

Ah, that makes sense. I was looking at the Network settings on my Treo 600.

The fact is, though, that my co-worker has a Razr with Verizon. He said he bought it straight from Verizon, but he also has a few other devices he's bought that aren't available in the US market, like a Sony pda running linux.
