  • Do you guys jack up your car from the rear axle?

I often go to my parent's house to work on my car. My apartment doesn't allow any car works in their complex.

Well anyway, every time I jack up my car from the rear axle, my father tends to stop me. He said it is the most unsafest place to jack up a car.

I could understand because his friend died this way when the car's axle landed on his chest.

Ofcourse I always use a stand after I'm done with the Jack. But what do you guys thinks?

The only reason it isn't the safest thing ever, is because you are lifting up the entire back of the car from 1 point, it could go side to side. As long as you jack it up, then put 2 stands under the rear sway bar mounts on the diff. it shouldn't be a problem. That is how i always do mine, and I still here typing this. My dad had a friend die from a car falling as well, and he is anal about these kind of things, and he never says anything to me about it.

I don't have a jack long enough at home to use the axle, but at my friends shop he had one. No problems jacking up my 77 T/A or his 73 Mustang w/it. Just made sure that stands were ready as soon os it got high enough for them at lowest level, then adjust when jacking done.

I usually have no other choice. the car is so low that even my low profile jack will somethime not reach the frame on the sides.

I jack under the diff pumpkin, but not on the lid. Jackstands on either the axle or subframe depending on whether I want the axle to hang down or not.

Whenever I jacked up the back of the camaro, i used the diff housing to do it.

Then, IIRC I used the swaybar mounts for the stands as well.
