  • Gage or Guage? Typo?

Has anyone noticed that on the instrument panel of the fbody, it says "Check Gages" instead of "Check Gauges"?

I think gages might be right too, but guages is more commonly used.

    I think I'm just retarted.

Call pontiac/ chevy customer assistance center and ask what a Gage is.

Tell them the indictor light for check gages (pronounce it gages and say the a like in apple) is illuminated!!!

We did this once and they did not know the answer!!!!!!!!!

In the military I have noticed that the word "gauge" with gage. It is consistent with all of your tech orders and vehicles. Some people just like to be different.

My giant Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary defines "gage" as "gauge" used in "chiefly technical" writing.

its a not so common variation of gauge. i was amused when i saw it on the dash the first time. i suspect, CHECK GAGES fits better (both 5 letters). interestingly, my 1979 collins says:

From Collins English Dictionary (1979) [collins1979]:

              Gage \Gage\, n
1721-87, British general and governor in America; commander
in chief of British forces at Bunker Hill (1775)

From Collins English Dictionary (1979) [collins1979]:

              gage \gage\, n
              1. something deposited as security against the fulfilment of
              an obligation; pledge

              2. (formerly) a glove or other object thrown down to indicate
              a challenge to combat

From Collins English Dictionary (1979) [collins1979]:

              gage \gage\, vt
to stake, pledge, or wager [archaic]

From Collins English Dictionary (1979) [collins1979]:

              gage \gage\, n
              short for greengage

From Collins English Dictionary (1979) [collins1979]:

              gage \gage\, n
marijuana or a marijuana cigarette [chiefly us]

i will check the oed when i get into work.
