  • Building my new computer system, and a question...

    Okay, here are the stats:

    Antec Sonata Mid-Tower Case
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...129-127&depa=1

    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ CPU
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-483&depa=1

    1GB Corsair PC-3200 RAM
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...145-026&depa=0

    Seagate 80GB 7200rpm Serial-ATA x2 (RAID-0)
    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...148-019&DEPA=1

    MSI K8N Neo-FSR (nVidia nForce3 250GB)
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...130-470&depa=1

...and my old HP 300i DVD writer and ATI 9600SE 128MB AGP 8x video card. Still waiting on the delivery of my CPU, but everything else is here.

Here's the question: will it show as 1 160 GB drive in the RAID-0 (striped) configuration, or is it going to be seen as 1 80GB drive?

EDIT: Forgot to add the Motherboard, oops!

    you still have 160 GB

if you run a Raid 1, you would only have 80GB

Data is written to each drive in succession, each block going to the next available drive thus the data is distributed across the array drives so 80+80=160. just make sure you buy good drives because with raid-0 if one drive failes you lose it all!
I\'m so used to doing so much with so little, I can do anything with everything!

I'd reconsider raid. Too risky, better performance, yeah. But not worth it unless you NEED it IMO.

Eh, none of my data is critical, anything that's important is backed up onto DVD-ROMs. I'll go for the performance side of things, rather than safety. My middle name is danger, you know...

          actually, no, it's not... :D

Seems like you could get all the same specs less expensively by just buying a Dell.

Anything that isn't built custom blows. Ever hear of upgradability? It's a real b*tch trying to upgrade a manufactured system. I'll never again purchase a manufactured system. Not to mention, you never get any extra crap installed that you don't want doing it this way.

Whoa, RAID-5 looks like it's the stuff, but I don't have the cash to do a setup like that. My case will easily handle 4 drives, but I don't think I really have a need for a setup like that. Thanks for broadening my horizons, however! ;)

Only 4 drives??? That's only 75% - raid-5 has much more potential than that! :D

So, when you decide to make the switch, I have SCSI hard drives and controllers at reasonable prices... ;)

Speaking of good 'ol Pops, turns out the Athlon64 3200+ I'm getting is to be a XMas present, so I guess this means I don't have to pay him for it... :D Guess I can be a bit more patient about its delivery now... I still can't wait, lol!

Corsair is over-priced, I got OCZ. Other than that, looks good. Go to pricewatch to find cheaper prices for hardware.
