DNV - I think it was ghosts in your case - freaky things that they are. We had a couple in college and I'm pretty sure something was in my dad's house one night when I lived there briefly...

My dad's house is pretty old (built in 1896) and big - It was pitch black because I was the only person awake and I walked up the stairs (which are fairly narrow). RIght before i hit the top of the stairs I felt like someone was at the top waiting for me, and then you know when you can see someone in pitch black because there is a dark section that is even blacker than the dark. Well there was definitely something there. I wasn't capable of keeping the scream from snaking out of my mouth - I probably would have choked on it - anyway, as I screamed I pushed through the darkness to the light switch - when I turned it on, there was nothing there.

But the weird part is that no one in the house woke up even though they were sleeping in rooms 5 feet away... and believe me, I had screamed loud enough to wake the dead. I think it took me hours and hours to fall to sleep that night.

That kind of thing is so creepy. Ugh...

You guys should come to a place called Kullihoma east of Ada. It is on Chickasaw land and if you go to the right place at night you can see a neat light show that shouldn't be there.

btw.. my own little story...
my parents had just filed for divorce a couple months before and my dad had moved out. it was about 3am and i was walking up to the second floor of my house from the basement. so i go up the first flight of stairs and walk down the hallway. keep in mind, the house is pitch black and i'm walking through this by memory after living in this house a few years and making this walk from the basement up to my bedroom every night. so i get to the second flight of stairs. i start walking up them. now, you know the sound you hear when somebody is walking? the sound of fabric brushing together? well, about 3/4 the way up the stairs, i hear this sound coming down the upstairs hall very fast toward the stairs. by this point, i'm about one stair from the top and i see a figure rushing at me down the hall. like somebody just posted, you could see their figure like it's darker than the darkness around them. this figure was about 7 feet tall. it seemed to be wearing a black cloak or something, i dunno. this is just what i remember seeing in the .5 seconds this happened. so i reach for the light switch at the top of the stairs and the figure reaches out a hand and grabs my arm from turning on the lights. when its hand touched me, it was burning. it was squeezing very hard. it was like somebody took hot metal and held it to my skin. i hurry and turn on the lights with my other hand and the figure disappears. i know i wasn't just seeing this because there was a mark from the strong grip and the burning on my forearm for a few days. it was a hand mark.

edit: forgot to mention... i looked this up somewhere. either a book or on the net, don't remember. what i found was something like this: a tall figure in the dark, wearing a black hooded cloak that reveals nothing but the lower half of its pale face (rest of it covered with oversized hood) and the hands. it's a death omen. it symbolizes the death of someone close to you and i had been very worried about my dad. he was incredibly depressed all the time since the divorce and he was taking it very hard. i was worried about him committing suicide. this freaked the hell out of me. so i called him all night trying to get ahold of him, but he wouldn't answer his phone. so i'm up all night worried about him. the next day, he calls me and lets me know he got my five million voicemails and he just forgot his phone in his truck.
