• Windows XP Service Pack 2

Hey this is a question for all you computer people out there. I have heard some bad things about the service pack, considering my computer at home started messing up pretty badly when we downloaded it when it first came out. But I was wondering if it was safe to do now, everytime I turn on my comp it has the little windows has updates thing pop up and I was not sure if they had fixed the bugs in it. I am asking this because all of a sudden when I go to open my hotmail account a lot of times internet explorer stops responding and I hit the view information part and it said because XP needed that service pack was probably the reason or some bs like that. So do you guys think it is safe or should I still stay away from it for a while? Thanks.

I also heard bad things about it, but thought I would give it a try.

I formatted with Windows XP Pro with SP2 integrated and my computer is running perfect.

I would advise against it myself. Some would disagree though. Do a search for SP2 in the lounge, and you'll find all my reasons.

From my personal experience dealing with it here at work.

I've had problems about 25% of the time with it.

Problems with Nortons, Problems with networking, problems with wireless, Personal Firewall causes me all kinds of problems, I usually have to turn it off completely. Sometimes I have to uninstall SP2 entirely sometimes I have to reinstall XP.

I never have a problem with it. Sure Norton's 2003 can't communicate correctly to give its status. I do use the firewall ALOT though and i really like the new firewall. I use a linksys router to block ports then windows blocks them again to make sure. I have XP PRO w/ service pack 2 and every latest patch. I run an IIS server teamspeak server VNC server and all that good stuff. Nope never had a problem with it. The best thing to do is to erase everything and install XP then go straight to the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site and update in the order that its provided.

For all of you that haven't done it i suggest getting ad-aware and spybot search and destroy and some sortof of normal antivirus program (nortons) and memorize the site housecall.trendmicro.com and use all of those at least once a week and/or keep the antivirus updated (run housecall once a week)

I wouldn't be surprised someone tries to install service pack 2 on an old year+ ago install of XP full of spyware and maybe a trojan/backdoor or virus hidden deep already caused dmg unnoticeable, then there are tons of programs installed. All kinds of gator, weatherbug, etc crap. Ya i wouldn't doubt it wouldn't work then.

Thats like tryin to stick an XP upgrade disc in and update from win98 or me or something and that was the same win9x install that came from factory. Jeez...

Most of the things I've heard about SP2 were negative. Personally, I am not going download SP2 anytime soon to my notebook because it runs a lot more programs in the background, resulting in a noticable temperature increase.

My system had Norton System works 2002 on it and after SP2 my computer went FUBAR. Found out it was because norton 2002 was not compatible with SP2. Removed system works 2002 and bought antivirus 2005 and its worked fine since.

That was my major problem with SP2.

We put SP2 on new computers as the vey first thing when it is connected to the internet for the first time. Never had a problem. Computers that have had any chance to collect any junk/mal/ad ware on it are not good to use SP2.

The SP2 popup blocking function is Ok.

SP2 caused all my peer to peer programs to stop working. I used the windows restore feature and backed it up to the day before I installed SP2 but my computer just hasn't been the same since. I still have nagging little problems with it ever since I tried SP2.
