• What video card?

Since there seems to be a lot of computer smart people on here... What kind of video card should I get if im really into video editing. Right now I had my friend build me a computer and I use Adobe Premiere 6.5, or maybe 7.0? The videos I render, or whatever you want to call it, have sound lag, and get extremelly jittery and jumpy as the video file gets longer. I have a P4 2.4 Ghz I think, 512 Ram DDR, an 800 mHz bla bla something hyperthreading motherboard, and an All in Wonder Radeon 64 meg ddr(?) video card. I believe thats the source of the problem? The computer in general is pretty slow and kinda crappy, and sometimes restarts all by itself though, so that may have issues. Ideas please? Thanks! :D

first off, I'd get more ram, for what you're doing. At least 1GB total system memory should be a starting point. I'm not totally sure about the graphics requirements on the programs that you're running, but for the most part, the CPU will be doing a lot of the video processing. Upgraging to a video card with an onboard GPU would help you out, as it frees up a part of the CPU, during graphics-intensive processes. Also, look into at least 128MB of video ram on the card

^ I agree

1GB System RAM, ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 with 128-256MB of Video RAM. Look into a new power supply if your system is restarting, get something that's quality (like Antec) and get nothing less than 350W, 380-400W would be better though. Another cause of system restarts would possibly be bad system RAm as well. Good Luck!

Funny nobody mentions the hard drive.

They don't make hard drives like these:

Just to play Doom on.

If you are serious, they make HDs specifically for A/V editing, but cost a fortune.

edit - here is an example:
my 2nd computer had a 12gb seagate 5200 rpm drive. It took about 1-3 minute to rip the audio off a music video. I upgraded that to a 60gb 7200 rpm drive. It took 10-20 seconds after that... think about it

Honestly I don't think his HDD is the bottleneck, unless it's working too much due to excessive virtual memory utilization from a lack of system RAM.

Alright, so I gotta buy 512 MB more RAM eh? Hmm, if I dont have the packaging for the RAM I bought in the first place, how can I tell what kind I need so I buy the right stuff? Also, I don't think I want to deal with an All In Wonder again, so will a regular high powered graphics card be just as good? And can I just buy some other stand alone product that will take composite and S video input so I can record clips? Thanks again.

Does your friend know which motherboard he used to build your computer? Chances are you'll need PC-3200 DDR RAM. Open your case and find out how many slots you have remaining, if any. If you have two open, you've got the option of buying two 256MB chips, but there's no cost or performance benefit in that. I'd suggest buying a single 512MB chip.
