first off, you can get a 250 gig hard drive for as low as 115 dollars these days.....

second, the radeon 9800 isnt the top dogg anymore, and they go for as low as 175....

"8 gigs of memory support" ok and? so how much does it actualy have...

The only nice thing about that computer is the monitor.

I could build a dual AMD 64 3ghz ( 6 ghz ) watercooled, with a terabyte of hd space, an gf 6800 extreme ( the one that must be watercooled) , 2 gigs of ddr pc 3200, and that monitor for the price of that thing and still have money left over.... that comps a POS

    3g's LoL

A 2.5ghz apple is not the same as a 2.5ghz intel or amd

Apple has always been behind on processing numbers, but they still perform as good or better. Just like intel needs faster cpu speed than AMD to do the same thing It's just the OS that sucks.

And Dual AMD 64s... thats 2 grand right there.

This wasn't about what "could" be built... its about what is built by a major company Dell doesn't have anything like this that I've ever seen.

If you can find 2GB DIMMs (they're rather expensive), you can shove up to 16 GB into a G5 tower.

we (meaning work) already have one. the others are on back order apparently.

the ati 9800 is a useless card. it eats up the adjacent pci slot with its huge (useless) heatsink and fan. the machine only has 3 pci slots to start with.

anyway, for our application the g5 is a huge win. first, we are dealing with network data, so we dont spend time converting from network order to cpu order. second, the altivec can be used to significantly speed up the checksum computation. we can sink 70% of a 10G link.

The only "great" computer ive seen lately is one on tech tv. It was a big *** moniter and had a 3.4 ghz computer overclocked to 4.5 ghz. It had an amazing g-card overclocked to be 2x better than anyhting on the market.. And it kept its pc temp and 33 degrees so it wouldnt freez but it was cold. I think the hottest the processor ever got was 45 degrees. i dun remember much more, he said it cost like 10k though. It was basically a freezer pumping air into the case.. it was really ****ing cool.

By the way, its better to have a small amount of fast ram than a large amount of slow *** ram, something new came out this summer, its like pc4500 or somethings, its hella expensive but i hear it performs like a beast. Also watercooled is out, freezing is in! No possible heat limits anymore.
                      Red 98 A4 Firebird
..its pretty..
- - - - - - - - -
6 Infinity 3-way speakers with Alpine deck and 720 watt Kenwood amp..

There are always heat limits when it comes to stability.

And like I already said, but you guys do not read for some reason..
