• strange, strange computer problem...

but it IS XP.

lately, any program i attempt to open from my desktop or the start button (except anitvirus) will begin to open for a second, and then end the task before anything starts.

the quick launch buttons work, but not for any of the microsoft software. my system tray is also diminished to only IM and my sound card controller.

wtf is going on here? was the latest windows update a total POS?

You upgraded to SP2, didn't you? Did you bother doing your research and making sure you wanted to update, or even NEEDED to update? You see, just because the update is out there, the companies only recommend updating if you NEED to.

what are you talking about? everyone needs to update to sp2. thats the point of a service pack. its not just a general fix, its an update. thats like saying you only need to update video drivers if you're playing the newest games... NO.
Updating to SP2 was the right thing to do

feel better?

i just rebooted and am experiencing the same problems. it has to be correlated to SP2.

i'm guessing this is not a problem that reverting with system restore will get around?

Hey, so you're saying that you updated to SP2 and MrCoffee was wrong about his Explorer Shell theory?

OK.

Now let's see if there's a work around to your problem.

Oh, BTW...
MrCoffee, your time would be better spent helping people with their problems than trying to criticize another member who's looking for more info. I understand SP2 is critical to fix certain security bugs, but you know in all the time the XP platform was getting attacked, I didn't get hit by a single problem that was taking so many computers down. It's called smart computing, and you only do it by exercising common sense and and doing the updates as they came out. Firewalls and antivirus should be REQUIRED if you don't want problems cropping up.

Even though I have the CD from Microsoft with the SP2 update, I haven't installed it on either of my two systems because I've had no problems in the past. If something happens, however and it's due to me not having SP2 installed, I can always reinstall and put on SP2 from the get-go. I ust don't have the NEED to do so at this time.

Possible, but remember everything that gets installed on AF computers have to be certified. It may just be in the testing phases to see if it's suitable. But hey, that's Comm's job. ;)

OK, at least it uninstalled properly without FUBARing your system completely.

OMFG Nononononono. I've been playing with computers since i was in 7th grade. Sp2 is the DEVIL <--- it screwed my pc for like 3 hours last night. hard locked it and let explorer hang. Do not upgrade unless you absoultly know that it will work.!!!!!

DO NOT install SP 2 yet. The list of programs that it breaks is long and scary.

I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. It is not a critical update. You can find individual hotfixes for any known holes. MS is trying to push it through automatic updates, but many feel that it is NOT necessary.

For me, it was worth doing, after I did my research. I put it on a friend's machine...the thing did not even boot up. This was after a FRESH install of Windows XP (NTFS) to his computer after a full format.

You should probably uninstall it. An outside program is a better firewall, but the MS one does a good enough job for a typical PC user. The popup-blocker..same thing. Those are the only two things you'll really notice. That, and the more complicated automatic update features that are annoying.

Once again, SP2 is NOT needed. Like L32Projekt said, do your damn research.
