I knew it was SP2's fault. I'm one of the lucky ones who survived through it. Just make sure you are up-to-date with hotfixes, especially the latest and greatest JPG Buffer Overflow treasure.

Updating to SP2 was the right thing to do
I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. It is not a critical update. You can find individual hotfixes for any known holes. MS is trying to push it through automatic updates, but many feel that it is NOT necessary.

For me, it was worth doing, after I did my research. I put it on a friend's machine...the thing did not even boot up. This was after a FRESH install of Windows XP (NTFS) to his computer after a full format.

You should probably uninstall it. An outside program is a better firewall, but the MS one does a good enough job for a typical PC user. The popup-blocker..same thing. Those are the only two things you'll really notice. That, and the more complicated automatic update features that are annoying.

Once again, SP2 is NOT needed. Like L32Projekt said, do your damn research.

      </font>[/QUOTE]Agreed, really do your research.

The scary thing is that these articles are "LIVING DOCUMENTS" meaning that microsoft is updating them constantly as they find new programs that break.

      http://www.cramsession.com/articles/...52004-1436.asp
"Some programs seem to stop working after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2," has been updated three times as of August 17. (Check the last reviewed and revision numbers at the end of the article to see if it's been touched since I wrote this story.) Forty-five separate programs or platforms are mentioned in this article, some of which are security related. Surprisingly, numerous Microsoft programs or services also appear herein, including Visual Studio .NET, SQL, SMS 2003 Server, Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003, and Microsoft SNA 4.0 SP3, along with numerous third-party products.
      and
"Programs that are known to experience a loss of functionality when they run on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer," has been updated seven times as of August 19. (Do likewise with this KB article as suggested in the previous list item to see if it's been touched in the meantime.) Thirty-eight separate programs are mentioned in this article, many of which are security related.
SP2 has NOT been approved for distrubition to any Navy/Marine Corps computer.

Well, it's time for my retrain opportunity in a few months. Is life good for SSgt's in Comm? I'm tired of the Security Forces lifestyle, and would like to see what the "Real Air Force" does (weekends and holidays off, down-days, family days, you know, not being at work all the time...)

                        Viper,

Basically anything involving working with computers and troubleshooting. I have, however began looking at what's called a Technical Application Specialist (9S100 AFSC) and it requires some high scores in ASVAB (which I have) and to take the EDPT test and get no less than a 53 (which I need to do, gotta schedule it with my MPF.) I can't wait to get out of Security Forces, and will basically take any job I can get my hands on...
