  • Workout/Dietary Regime Question

Good friend of mine is a personal trainer, he recommended that I take whey protein and CLA. Protein for the muscle, CLA for the stoppage of fat. He also said that CLA is extremely safe. I've been taking it for about 4 days now, haven't noticed anything. And I haven't incorporated the whey protein into my regime yet. I'm curious how much I need to take. I heard once before I lift, and then one time afterwards? I weigh about 190, so how much exactly should I mix? Thanks guys

whey protein is good, but the problem with it is that your body absorbs it waaaayy to quickly for it to add onto your muscle mass.

don't worry about seeing results right away, cuz you won't. keep working out, doing cardio and weight lifting. you should see results in a month or so. remember to vary your workouts, otherwise your body will get used to the workouts and it won't respond.

oh, and it's "regimen". "regime" is what saddam hussein's government was.

I'll quote someone on another board who I saw go from fatty to ripped fitness guru in a matter of months. I asked him for some tips and taking his advice really has payed off.

      Originally posted by YoYoFREAKZ!:
My diet is around 3500-4000 calories per day, all from natural foods (protein scources Chicken, Steak and Fish) preferably 1.5 grams of protein per lb of body weight. (3 protein shakes per day plus the natural food intake)

Make sure you get your essential Fatty Acids (Flax seed and Olive oil is good)

Carbohydrate intake is extremely high, and ranges from day to day depending on how I feel but it averages from 3-5 cubs whole wheat pasta, 3-5 baked potatos, and 2 slices of whole wheat bread.

I eat an apple before working out for low glycemic carbohydrates (long lasting type of carb that gives you energy for a longer period of time than high glycemic)

      1 salad per day

after working out I take in 30-50 grams protein with honey for recuperation making sure I take in 100 grams of high glycemic carbohydrate within 4 hours of post workout

It is very important you eat (every 3 hours), and sleep properly, your muscles grow after the workout because they are broken down during the workout, what you do outside of the gym is just
as important as what you do in it.

Also my principle is to bulk and then cut as opposed to staying lean all the time, right now I am bulking until I have a big enough base to cut on (currently 213lbs) but I need atleast another 21lbs before I am big enough to do anything with.
I basically drink 1 shake (2 scoops) when I wake up, 1 after my workout (not cardio), and 1 before I go to sleep.

i am suspicious of any supplement other than protein or steroids.

but, like most everybody else here has said, the most important things while exercising are eating well (BALANCED), sleeping well, and actually exercising, in that order.

as for CLA, i think the joke that i hear most often is that it's a great muscle builder for animals, but not for people... the supplement doesn't respond as well to our metabolisms.

instead of spending your money on that stuff, just take some time to plan out a good diet.

Yea these supplement companies are making a mint on these products and people are quick to give them credit but 95% of your results depend on eating right and putting in sweat at the gym

            Whey protein - worth it
Mixed Protein bars - Worth it
            Creatine - Worth it
            Water - worth it
            Multi-vitamin - worth it
            CLA, R-ALA, glutamine - neah

You sound like the typical dude that expects results out of a bottle. I'm not even sure what your goals are, gain muscle/lose weight? You can only do one at a time. You havnt mentioned what your diets like and havnt started protein supplementation, so why not just focus with diet and protein and if you hit the wall at some point after working your *** off than than experiment with those fancy-named supplements backed up and marketed by a few short-term animal studies.

first, I didn't fall suspect to a fancy promotion.. i was referred to it by someone involved in the health and nutrition field. Secondly, alot of people have said positive things about it... i was merely curious if anyone knows anything about it via experience. Also, what's the amount of protein I should take? something corresponding to my weight? Thx again!

ok.. past 3 days, i've been taking the protein 3 times per day. morning, after i work out, and at night. 50g each serving, which is close to my weight minus body fat. My question is.. on days I don't work out, should i still take the protein?

                    Thanks

Yes take it even when you dont work out.

1gram or 1.5 grams per pound of bodyweight is the right amount of protein to take a day.

So if you 190 pounds, 190grams would be good to take.

Its not just about dietary and supplementary aspects. Another MAIN factor in whether or not you're going to gain muscle (in a sufficient amount of time) is wheter or not you do the workouts correctly. There's a wrong way, a slow way (takes longer for results), and the right way. I've seen sooo many people work out the wrong and slow way.
