WTF, 16 mpg???

ok, so I just filled up my car, and calculated the gas milage. 16 whopping MPG.

I can think of only 2 reasons for my car getting horrible milage.

1: I dont really trust my gas gauge. I've never taken the car past the "empty" line.
2: My car is a pig.

btw this is all city driving, as I usually dont use the freeway

Gas guage doesn't have anything to do with it. Fill your tank up all the way, reset your tripometer, drive around a while, fill the tank all the way up again. Then divide the miles you drove by the gallons of gas you just put in the car = your MPG

you should be able to get at least 350 miles on a full tank before it reads empty. Replace/clean filters, replace 02 sensor, seafoam it, accelerate smoothly

Yeah...your gas gauge has nothing to do with it...figure out how many gallons you put in the tank by looking at the pump....not the fuel gauge.

I get 15mpg in so cal traffic with a heavy foot..

You should be doing better than 16 I think.. but wouldn't your car throw a code if something were bad besides the filter?

hey I usually only get 16-17 MPG too since I usually only make short trips around town. After a long trip I only got 24 MPG on the highway, but it was going through a lot of hills/mountains. I've replaced everything I can think of but it still isn't that good. Maybe it's just normal, or maybe we're driving with more of a "lead foot" than we want to admit.

its making me feel better that other californians are getting horrible milage in traffic.

most of my driving is in traffic. i usually only drive to school and back, and theres a fair amount of traffic.

I don't understand why some people are getting such sh*tty mileage. My car has 120K on it and is Hypertech-programmed for 93 octane. I don't hit the interstate much either, but just driving around town I'm getting about 27 mpg, which is better than when the car was brand new.

Since you have a '99, I would highly recommend the ZZP tb spacer if you don't already have one. It added about 2 or 3 mpg when I installed mine, and with gas as high as it is, it'll pay for itself in no time.

But I have a K&N air filter, Was getting great gas milage around 20 miles per gallon.
Well Since I have been trying to get a break problem fixed, I took it to my dealership in PC. They did an oil change on it and keept the car a week, I told them they can drive it as much as they want for a week to find the problem and fix it, well they drove 120 miles on it then I drove approx 100miles. well I noticed My oil pressure rose the roof, Checked the Oil and they way overfilled it, like over 2 qts. Now I am getting around 12-13 mpg, last time I filled up 14.52 gallons at 192.8 miles. And now I am not flooring it all because I notced it signifagenly wehen the previous time I fill it at 178 and put in 15.3 gallons. I swear I coasted in the gas station. I was filling up at 320 miles. that is town city driving. So obviously I notice a difference.
BTW I have a new fuel pump and injectors due to warrenty work around 15k miles ago.
So if you figure it out or as soon as I do, ill let you know the problem is, and maybe you can see yourself.

There is no way on earth you get 27 mpg city, and if it is "city" then you do not live in a city. That's like 27 mpg in "town" or "village" lol

I think the additives they put in the gasoline also mess with your mileage. When I am in Irvine my mileage is 15 or 16, but at home in Tulare is goes above 20... it's just the driving style, the amount of stop lights, the gas... I know there isn't anything wrong with my car, so those are the only other reasons.
