  • Cursed with TV's

Gah this makes me so mad. So about 2 years ago when I was about to go off to college I decided it was finally time to get a TV so I bought just a plain old 19" Magnavox from Wal-Mart. I know, not the best place to buy electronics but when you are on a budget it does the trick. So after owning it for about 6 or 7 months I go to turn it off and it starts making this high pitched noise as soon as I press the power button and continues to do this anytime I have the TV plugged in. So needless to say I was a little upset having thought the TV would last me a little longer than that but I guess it happens. So then I get a new TV maybe 6 months later or so and this time look into them a little more and get one from Best Buy, this time a Toshiba and still a 19". Well come 6 or 7 months later and what happens? The exact same thing! Am I just cursed with TV's or what? I am dying here without my nightly dose of Sportscenter and now that its summer it sucks even more but I dont want to dish out another $100-150 for something that craps out on me after 6 months. Sorry just needed to rant.

Most TVs that I've had do that at one time or another, but I don't know why. I always assumed electrical interference.

I used to work at circuit city after H.S. and during training they said the #1 reason electronics wear out is power fluxuations. Everytime someone turns on/off a light, or the fridge kicks on whatever it sends a small fluxuation through the circuits of the house and anything plugged into it.

Of coarse they were trying to get us to sell over priced surge protectors, but it seems logical, I guess. I've used surge protectors ever since and I've never had any problems.

Honestly if your cash strapped go to a pawnshop, get a nice size tv (22-30inch) for $80 bucks give or take. Of coarse no warranties.

lol all i've ever had are tvs from pawnshops... the ones around here usually have pretty decent newer models for pretty cheap prices too... the one i have now is like 22 inches i think and i've had it for prolly 6 or 7 years... no problems at all... but i've never had any problems with RCAs products... mainly just tvs though... dont know about their other products...

The TV should still have a warranty after 6 months. Usually they are a year. Always save your receipt!

Even if you don't have your receipt Best Buy will have a record of your purchase. Call the store and see what your options are. That TV should still be under warranty. You may have to go through the manufacturer.
