Alright, my damn onboard sound is toast after a freak accident. Reinstall of the entire OS didn't fix it so I know it's hardware related. I picked up a Soundblaster Live 24-bit soundcard from CompUSA, and apparently that card has a problem with mic input with WinXP and Creative Labs refuses to fix their drivers. The Mrs NEEDS the mic to work, so I have to find a replacement card. We would like to keep the price at around $50 or less. Any ideas from first hand experience? Thanks in advance all!

Then go with the $21.95 old 16-bit card.. Before you give up on the Live, I would like to make you aware of the fact that there are pretty solid "aftermarket" drivers for those cards.
